Kyoto Day Trips in 3 Days
This nests the 2 day plan (Nara, then Osaka) and adds Uji as a third day, the cheapest of the four gateway routes at 240 yen and 20 minutes. All three trains run from the same Kyoto Station platform, none needs a JR Pass, and Uji’s timed Byodo-in slot is the one thing on this route that can actually sell out. Want more? The 4 day plan adds Himeji.
Book these before you go:
- Check rooms near Kyoto Station on Booking.com : three nights near the station keeps every morning’s train an easy walk.
- Check Nara day tours on GetYourGuide : bundles the Todai-ji ticket and deer park logistics into one price.
- Byodo-in’s Phoenix Hall interior at Uji has no advance booking and sells out by midday on weekends; go straight there on arrival, don’t save it for the afternoon.
Day 1: Nara
- Morning: JR Nara Line Miyakoji Rapid, 45 minutes, 720 yen one-way from Kyoto Station.
- 9am: Todai-ji , 800 yen, the Great Buddha hall.
- Late morning: Nara Park’s wild deer; crackers run about 150 yen a pack, and bites or butts happen once a pack runs dry.
- Lunch: a noodle or bento counter near Nara Station, 800-1,500 yen.
- Afternoon: Kasuga Taisha’s lantern approach, free.
- Day 1 total: roughly 2,500-3,500 yen ($15-22) per person.
Day 2: Osaka
- Morning: JR Special Rapid, about 28-30 minutes, 580 yen one-way to Osaka Station.

- Afternoon: Namba and Shinsaibashi, one stop further on the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line, free to browse.
- Day 2 total: roughly 2,000-3,000 yen ($12-18.50) per person.
Day 3: Uji
- Morning: JR Nara Line, 20-22 minutes, roughly 240 yen one-way, the cheapest fare of the three.
- On arrival: Byodo-in , 700 yen for the garden and Hoshokan Museum, plus 300 yen for the timed Phoenix Hall interior slot (9:30am-4:10pm, every 20 minutes, 50-person cap, first-come-first-served, no online booking). Go straight there before it fills.
- Lunch: a matcha-tasting salon near the temple, 550-850 yen a serving; Uji is Japan’s historic matcha-growing region.
- Afternoon: browse the small tea shops along the approach street, free.
- Day 3 total: roughly 1,500-2,000 yen ($9-12.50) per person, the cheapest day of the trip.

Is 3 days enough for the main Kyoto day trips?
Three days covers Nara, Osaka, and Uji, the three cheapest and fastest gateways, and leaves out only Himeji, which costs more in both train fare and admission after its 2026 price change. That makes this the best-value three-day spread of the whole family: no route here tops 45 minutes or 720 yen each way.
How much does a 3 day Kyoto day-trip plan cost?
Train fares and entry across the three days run roughly 6,000-8,000 yen ($37-49) per person, with food pushing the full three days to somewhere around 12,000-16,000 yen ($74-99), lodging not included. Uji is the standout value: a 240 yen ticket buys the cheapest full day on this list.
