Kyoto Day Trips in 4 Days
This nests the 3 day plan (Nara, Osaka, Uji) and adds Himeji Castle as a fourth day, the one genuinely expensive route in this family after its 2026 price change. Four days is the complete core network: everything closer and cheaper comes first, the costlier outlier comes last. Longer still? See the 6 day plan , which adds Kobe and Mount Hiei.
Book these before you go:
- Check rooms near Kyoto Station on Booking.com : four nights on the JR line keeps every gateway a direct ride away.
- Check Himeji Castle tours on Viator : worth it for the castle’s confusing multi-gate layout, and Himeji’s own site sells timed digital tickets from 90 days out.
- Byodo-in’s Phoenix Hall interior at Uji sells out by midday with no advance booking; hit it first thing on Day 3.
Day 1: Nara
- Morning: JR Nara Line Miyakoji Rapid, 45 minutes, 720 yen one-way.
- 9am: Todai-ji , 800 yen, the Great Buddha hall.
- Late morning: Nara Park’s wild deer, crackers about 150 yen a pack.
- Lunch: a noodle or bento counter near Nara Station, 800-1,500 yen.
- Afternoon: Kasuga Taisha’s lantern approach, free.
- Day 1 total: roughly 2,500-3,500 yen ($15-22) per person.
Day 2: Osaka
- Morning: JR Special Rapid, 28-30 minutes, 580 yen one-way.
- Late morning: Osaka Castle grounds, free.
- Lunch: Dotonbori’s canal-front stalls, a few hundred yen a stop.
- Afternoon: Namba and Shinsaibashi via the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line, free to browse.
- Day 2 total: roughly 2,000-3,000 yen ($12-18.50) per person.
Day 3: Uji
- Morning: JR Nara Line, 20-22 minutes, roughly 240 yen one-way.
- On arrival: Byodo-in , 700 yen for the garden and museum, plus 300 yen for the timed Phoenix Hall slot, capped at 50 people every 20 minutes, no online booking. Go first, before it fills.
- Lunch: a matcha-tasting salon near the temple, 550-850 yen a serving.
- Day 3 total: roughly 1,500-2,000 yen ($9-12.50) per person.
Day 4: Himeji
- Morning: JR Special Rapid, 90-95 minutes, 2,210 yen one-way, no surcharge; or the Shinkansen, 55 minutes, roughly 4,740 yen. The Rapid is the budget call if the extra 35-40 minutes doesn’t bother you.
- On arrival: Himeji Castle , non-resident admission 2,500 yen as of March 1, 2026 (up from 1,000 yen; under-18s still free). Budget 1.5-2 hours inside, longer in peak season.
- Lunch: a casual spot near the station before the return train.
- Evening: return by the same route you arrived on.
- Day 4 total: roughly 5,000-9,500 yen ($31-59) per person depending on Rapid versus Shinkansen, by far the priciest day here.
| Day | Focus | Train time | Train cost |

| Day 2 | Osaka: Dotonbori, Osaka Castle grounds | 28-30 min (JR rapid) | 580 yen each way |
| Day 3 | Uji: Byodo-in, matcha tasting | 20-22 min (JR) | 240 yen each way |
| Day 4 | Himeji: the castle | 55 min (Shinkansen) or 90-95 min (Rapid) | 4,740 yen or 2,210 yen each way |
Is Himeji worth adding to a Kyoto day-trip plan?
Yes, but treat it as the splurge day of the four, not a like-for-like with Nara or Uji. Between the new 2,500 yen non-resident admission and a Shinkansen fare that alone costs more than Nara, Osaka and Uji’s train tickets combined, Himeji roughly doubles a typical day’s spend here. It’s still worth the White Heron Castle’s interior, just don’t budget it like the other three.
How much does a 4 day Kyoto day-trip plan cost?
Train fares and admission across all four days run roughly 11,000-15,500 yen ($68-96) per person, with food pushing the full four days to somewhere around 18,000-24,000 yen ($111-148), lodging not included. Himeji alone accounts for close to half that total, which is the honest reason most guides pair it with Osaka instead of a dedicated Kyoto round trip.
