Kyoto Day Trips in 7 Days
This nests the 6 day plan (Nara, Osaka, Uji, Himeji, Mount Hiei, Kobe) and closes with a flex day built for whatever went wrong the first time round, most often Uji’s Byodo-in Phoenix Hall slot selling out before you got there. A full week is enough to treat every gateway as a real day instead of a rushed one. For the shorter core, see the 4 day plan .
Book these before you go:
- Check rooms near Kyoto Station on Booking.com : a week on the JR line means location matters six mornings running, not just one.
- Check Himeji Castle tours on Viator , and book Himeji’s own timed digital ticket from 90 days out in peak season.
- Byodo-in’s Phoenix Hall interior at Uji has no advance booking and sells out by midday; this is exactly the kind of thing Day 7 exists to fix if it happens.
Day 1: Nara
- Morning: JR Nara Line Miyakoji Rapid, 45 minutes, 720 yen one-way.
- 9am: Todai-ji , 800 yen, the Great Buddha hall.
- Late morning: Nara Park’s wild deer, crackers about 150 yen a pack.
- Lunch: a noodle or bento counter near Nara Station, 800-1,500 yen.
- Day 1 total: roughly 2,500-3,500 yen ($15-22) per person.
Day 2: Osaka
- Morning: JR Special Rapid, 28-30 minutes, 580 yen one-way.
- Late morning: Osaka Castle grounds, free.
- Lunch: Dotonbori’s canal-front stalls, a few hundred yen a stop.
- Afternoon: Namba and Shinsaibashi via the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line, free to browse.
- Day 2 total: roughly 2,000-3,000 yen ($12-18.50) per person.
Day 3: Uji
- Morning: JR Nara Line, 20-22 minutes, roughly 240 yen one-way.
- On arrival: Byodo-in , 700 yen for the garden and museum, plus 300 yen for the timed Phoenix Hall slot, capped at 50 people every 20 minutes, no online booking. Go first.
- Lunch: a matcha-tasting salon near the temple, 550-850 yen a serving.
- Day 3 total: roughly 1,500-2,000 yen ($9-12.50) per person.
Day 4: Himeji
- Morning: JR Special Rapid, 90-95 minutes, 2,210 yen one-way; or the Shinkansen, 55 minutes, roughly 4,740 yen.
- On arrival: Himeji Castle , non-resident admission 2,500 yen as of March 1, 2026, up from 1,000 yen (under-18s still free).
- Day 4 total: roughly 5,000-9,500 yen ($31-59) per person depending on Rapid versus Shinkansen.
Day 5: Mount Hiei and Enryaku-ji
- Morning: Eizan Railway from Demachiyanagi to Yase-Hieizanguchi, roughly 280 yen, then a connecting cable car; or via Sakamoto, about 30 minutes and 460 yen, then a cable car around 1,570 yen round trip.
- On arrival: Enryaku-ji, founded 788 CE, entry roughly 1,000 yen for the To-do, Sai-to, and Yokawa precincts.
- Day 5 total: roughly 1,800-2,800 yen ($11-17) per person, plus lunch.
Day 6: Kobe
- Morning: Shinkansen from Kyoto to Shin-Kobe, roughly 30 minutes, about 2,870 yen one-way non-reserved.
- Midday: the port area and Kitano’s Western-style houses, mostly free to walk.
- Lunch or dinner: a Kobe beef set, the one planned splurge of the week.
- Day 6 total: roughly 6,000-9,000 yen ($37-56) per person, driven by the beef, not the train.
Day 7: Flex day
- Morning: if Uji’s Byodo-in Phoenix Hall sold out on Day 3, return for the 240 yen ride and try again before 10am, when the slot cap is easiest to beat.
- Alternative: if everything went to plan, spend the day on Nara’s Kasuga Taisha and Isuien Garden, both skipped on Day 1 in favor of Todai-ji and the deer, for another 45 minute, 720 yen round trip.
- Afternoon: pack, confirm departure transport, and use any leftover cash on Nishiki Market snacks back in Kyoto before an evening flight from Kansai International (KIX).
- Day 7 total: roughly 1,500-3,500 yen ($9-22) per person, the cheapest or most flexible day of the week depending on what it’s covering.

Why build in a flex day at all?
Because the one genuine bottleneck in this whole network, Uji’s Byodo-in Phoenix Hall, has no advance booking and sells out by midday on weekends and during cherry blossom season. A week-long trip is long enough to absorb that risk without losing a planned day elsewhere; a shorter trip usually just has to accept the miss.
How much does a 7 day Kyoto day-trip plan cost?
Train fares and admission across all seven days run roughly 20,000-31,000 yen ($123-191) per person, with food, including the Kobe beef splurge, pushing the total to somewhere around 34,000-45,000 yen ($210-278), lodging not included. That’s still cheaper per gateway than most single-city guided tour packages covering the same six destinations.
