Kyoto Day Trips in 6 Days
This nests the 4 day plan (Nara, Osaka, Uji, Himeji) and adds two quieter days: Mount Hiei’s Enryaku-ji, a genuinely uncrowded UNESCO-listed mountaintop temple complex, then Kobe, the shortest and easiest Shinkansen hop of the whole family. Six days is enough to stop rushing and still see all six gateways. The full week is the 7 day plan .
Book these before you go:
- Check rooms near Kyoto Station on Booking.com : six nights is long enough that a bad location costs real transit time across every gateway.
- Check Himeji Castle tours on Viator , and book Himeji’s own timed digital ticket from 90 days out if you’re travelling in peak season.
- Byodo-in’s Phoenix Hall interior at Uji sells out by midday with no advance booking; go there first on Day 3, not last.
Day 1: Nara
- Morning: JR Nara Line Miyakoji Rapid, 45 minutes, 720 yen one-way.
- 9am: Todai-ji , 800 yen, the Great Buddha hall.
- Late morning: Nara Park’s wild deer, crackers about 150 yen a pack.
- Lunch: a noodle or bento counter near Nara Station, 800-1,500 yen.
- Day 1 total: roughly 2,500-3,500 yen ($15-22) per person.
Day 2: Osaka

- Late morning: Osaka Castle grounds, free.
- Lunch: Dotonbori’s canal-front stalls, a few hundred yen a stop.
- Afternoon: Namba and Shinsaibashi via the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line, free to browse.
- Day 2 total: roughly 2,000-3,000 yen ($12-18.50) per person.
Day 3: Uji
- Morning: JR Nara Line, 20-22 minutes, roughly 240 yen one-way.
- On arrival: Byodo-in , 700 yen for the garden and museum, plus 300 yen for the timed Phoenix Hall slot, capped at 50 people every 20 minutes, no online booking.
- Lunch: a matcha-tasting salon near the temple, 550-850 yen a serving.
- Day 3 total: roughly 1,500-2,000 yen ($9-12.50) per person.
Day 4: Himeji
- Morning: JR Special Rapid, 90-95 minutes, 2,210 yen one-way; or the Shinkansen, 55 minutes, roughly 4,740 yen.
- On arrival: Himeji Castle , non-resident admission 2,500 yen as of March 1, 2026, up from 1,000 yen (under-18s still free). Budget 1.5-2 hours inside.
- Day 4 total: roughly 5,000-9,500 yen ($31-59) per person depending on Rapid versus Shinkansen.
Day 5: Mount Hiei and Enryaku-ji
- Morning: Eizan Railway from Demachiyanagi Station to Yase-Hieizanguchi, roughly 280 yen, then a connecting cable car to the summit area. An alternative route runs via Sakamoto, about 30 minutes and 460 yen, then a cable car around 1,570 yen round trip.
- On arrival: Enryaku-ji, founded in 788 CE as the seat of Tendai Buddhism, entry roughly 1,000 yen covering the To-do, Sai-to, and Yokawa precincts.
- Afternoon: the mountain trails between precincts run far quieter than anything in central Kyoto or at Fushimi Inari.
- Day 5 total: roughly 1,800-2,800 yen ($11-17) per person, plus lunch.
Day 6: Kobe
- Morning: Shinkansen from Kyoto to Shin-Kobe, roughly 30 minutes, about 2,870 yen one-way non-reserved, the shortest hop of the six.
- Midday: the port area and Kitano’s Western-style houses, mostly free to walk.
- Lunch or dinner: a Kobe beef set, the one deliberate splurge on this trip, typically several thousand yen more than any other meal in this itinerary.
- Day 6 total: roughly 6,000-9,000 yen ($37-56) per person, driven mostly by the beef, not the train.
| Day | Focus | Train time | Train cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Nara: Todai-ji, deer park | 45 min (JR rapid) | 720 yen each way |
| Day 2 | Osaka: Dotonbori, Osaka Castle grounds | 28-30 min (JR rapid) | 580 yen each way |
| Day 3 | Uji: Byodo-in, matcha tasting | 20-22 min (JR) | 240 yen each way |
| Day 4 | Himeji: the castle | 55 min (Shinkansen) or 90-95 min (Rapid) | 4,740 yen or 2,210 yen each way |
| Day 5 | Mount Hiei: Enryaku-ji | roughly 30-45 min (Eizan/cable car) | approx. 280-460 yen each way |
| Day 6 | Kobe: port, Kitano, Kobe beef | 30 min (Shinkansen) | 2,870 yen each way |
Which of these six day trips is the best value for money?
Uji, without much competition: a 240 yen train ride, a free approach walk, and a 700 yen temple ticket buys the cheapest full day in this itinerary. Mount Hiei runs close behind on price and wins on solitude, since it draws a fraction of the crowds any city-center Kyoto sight or Nara’s deer park sees.
How much does a 6 day Kyoto day-trip plan cost?
Train fares and admission across all six days run roughly 18,500-27,500 yen ($114-170) per person, with food, including one Kobe beef splurge, pushing the total to somewhere around 30,000-40,000 yen ($185-247), lodging not included. Spread that cost across six days and it still averages out cheaper per day than a single dedicated Himeji round trip on its own.
