A Romantic Break in Dili

Dili will not offer a luxury honeymoon, and it does not pretend to. A romantic break here is made of simple pleasures: sunsets, a good dinner, a boat trip and a night or two on a small island. Two evenings in the capital and a stay on Atauro make a balanced plan.

First evening: sunset at Areia Branca

Areia Branca, or White Sands, is the beach the official tourism site recommends for sunset drinks, on the coast road east of the centre. Arrive an hour before dusk and watch from the shore. The water is not part of the plan. The UK government says crocodiles are occasionally seen near Dili beaches, so ask your hotel before getting wet and head back by taxi after dark.

Second evening: dinner on Avenida de Portugal

This western beach road has restaurants, and several embassies are nearby. Book an early table, since the UK government flags harassment on Beach Road and advises care after dark. Arrive and leave by taxi, and keep to well-used stretches rather than walking along the shore at night.

Dolphins from a private boat

Spinner dolphins are seen daily off the north coast, which makes a chartered boat the most private way to spend a morning. Blue and sperm whales peak between August and November, according to the official tourism site. Compass Diving, Dive Timor Lorosae and Moby Wildlife Tours are the listed operators. A boat for two will cost whatever you negotiate, so agree the price and the length of the trip in advance. Ask whether the crew follows the national whale-watching guidelines.

A night or two at Beloi on Atauro

Atauro Island is where the water is safest, because the official tourism site names it as the exception to its crocodile warning for the coast. Beloi has dive resorts and homestays, with reefs just off the shore. Atauro Dive Resort and Beloi Beach Hotel Dive Resort are among the options. Snorkel in the morning and spend the evening on the beach with nothing scheduled. The ferry from Porto Dili costs US$4 each way and takes about 2 hours 15 minutes on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday sailings. Practical notes

The US dollar is the currency, and small notes are best, because cards are limited. Check the UK safety advice before you book, and avoid protests and crowds.
