Copenhagen's Best Walking Routes
The harbor is the route to start with in Copenhagen, not the old town. Havneringen, the 13km signposted ring circling the inner harbor, shows off the modern city’s architecture before you ever set foot on a cobblestone.
Havneringen, the harbor ring
Split into 3-5km sections if the full loop is too much for one day. It crosses Inderhavnsbroen, the “Kissing Bridge” linking Nyhavn to Christianshavn, and Cirkelbroen, Olafur Eliasson’s five circular ship-mast platforms, along with Lille Langebro and Bryggebroen. Highlights along the way include the Black Diamond royal library, BLOX and its architecture center, and the free public harbor bath at Islands Brygge. Strøget, and one block over
Rådhuspladsen to Kongens Nytorv along Strøget, Europe’s oldest pedestrianized spine, car-free since 1962 and running 1.1km through Nytorv, Gammeltorv and the Stork Fountain at Amagertorv. Fire in 1795 and British bombardment in 1807 forced the rebuilding of these 18th-century facades. Strøget itself is mostly international retail; the real character sits one block over, on Læderstræde and Kompagnistræde, where independent shops and bakeries are.
Freetown Christiania, since 2024
Bådmandsstræde 43 in Christianshavn, a 10-minute walk from the Christianshavn metro stop. Founded in 1971 by squatters in abandoned military barracks, known for self-built eco-architecture along the lake and collective workshops. Pusher Street was permanently excavated and closed by residents and police in April 2024 to end the open-air drug trade there; the earthen paths, craft stalls and music venues around it remain open. Resident-led walks depart weekends at 15:00, daily in peak summer, for about 60 DKK, from the main entrance at christiania.org . No photographing residents or homes, no running, no vehicles.
Vesterbro’s Kødbyen
West from Central Station along Istedgade and Halmtorvet into the former meatpacking district, built in 1878 and 1934. The functionalist 1934 white-tiled hall now holds independent galleries, craft breweries including Warpigs, and seafood at Kødbyens Fiskebar. Free, tip-based options
Sandemans New Europe and Copenhagen Free Walking Tours both leave from Rådhuspladsen at 10:00, 11:00 and 14:00 daily, covering City Hall, Christiansborg, Kongens Nytorv and Nyhavn over 2.5 to 3 hours.
