A west-facing bay, a warm sea and a sunset every evening are the whole pitch. Kendwa is easy to plan for two: choose a resort, add one boat day and leave the rest of the time free.

A sample evening

  1. Late afternoon: a spa session at your resort.

Dolphins sometimes surface near boats, but treat that as a bonus and never as a promise.

One day on the reef

A snorkelling outing to Mnemba Atoll gives you coral and fish, with swimming done from the boat because the island is closed to landing. The conservation area charge is US$10 per adult for non-East-Africans, and the Special Area charge is US$25. Operators may bundle these charges.

Dress and manners

On the beach and aboard boats, swimwear is fine. In villages, shoulders and knees should be covered. The fine for clothing that offends the authorities starts at US$700, so err on the side of covering up.

December to March brings hot, calm weather. June to October is drier and cooler. The long rains come around April and May, and some resorts shut for maintenance then, so confirm before booking.
