Museums, Manors and Boulders Near Kuusalu
The sights of Kuusalu parish fall into two groups: walk-in sights, and sights that admit visitors only by prior arrangement. Sorting them that way makes a day trip from Tallinn much smoother. The parish sits in Harju County on the Gulf of Finland, and distances run 40 to 55 km east of the capital.
Walk-in sights
Majakivi boulder. On the Juminda peninsula near Hara village stands the third-largest erratic boulder in Estonia. It is about 7 m high, with a girth of roughly 32 m, and a ladder reaches the top. The RMK Majakivi-Pikanõmme trail, about 7 km long and open all year, runs past it. The Visit Estonia trail listing has the route.
Viru bog tower. The observation tower rises over the bog about 1.3 km from the car park, along a free 3 km boardwalk. RMK asks walkers to stay on the boardwalk. Its trail page gives the rest.
Tsitre. A former seaside summer estate on Kolga Bay with an observation tower, a beach and a 0.5 km tree trail.
Viinistu Art Museum. Opening days change by season. The collection belongs to Jaan Manitski, and the museum is the only private art museum in Estonia. It opened in 2002 and refreshed its exhibition in 2020. Entry is EUR 6 for adults and EUR 3 for concessions, with Wednesday to Sunday, 11:00 to 18:00 on the official page. Confirm days at viinistu.ee .
Sights that need a message first
Kolga manor. A privately owned manor, partly restored, with a Kolga Museum beside it. Visitors enter the main house by appointment, during events or on guided tours. Contact +372 501 0966 or kolgamanor@gmail.com . The Visit Estonia page lists the terms.
Kiiu tower. Four floors of medieval stone with 1.8 m walls, in Kiiu village, the smallest surviving medieval defensive structure in the Baltic countries. It was probably completed at the start of the 16th century. It has a cafe and free parking, and visits are by advance booking, via +372 503 0487 or kiiutower@gmail.com .
Hara submarine base. This derelict Soviet-era harbour and submarine base charges EUR 10 for adults, EUR 7 for students and seniors and EUR 22 for a family. In summer, it opens at weekends from 11:00 to 19:00, and outside summer it is by reservation. Visit rules forbid climbing on the pier rocks and abandoned buildings, and swimming or jumping into the water. See harasadam.ee .
Old graves and a hillfort
At Muuksi, on the north shore of Lake Kahala, the Hundikangrud stone-cist barrows date from roughly 1100 to 200 BCE. Visit Harju counts 85 barrows, and a hillfort also stands at Muuksi. A Visit Harju entry describes the site.
Getting around
A car works best; buses on the E20 stop at Loksa tee, which sits 1.3 km from the bog trailhead. Timetables are on peatus.ee . To see these sights with a driver, search Viator .
