Overnight Options Near Garni and Geghard
As of October 2026 the FCDO advises against all travel within 5 km of Armenia’s eastern border and on the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan. Garni and its Kotayk neighbours are outside both areas. Read the live notices on gov.uk and travel.state.gov.
The Short Answer
Garni has no verified multi-day programme, because its main sights fit into one day from Yerevan, which is 25 to 30 km away. What exists is a set of building blocks: a guesthouse night, a hike with rangers, and links to other places covered in their own guides.
Block 1: A Night in Garni
Guesthouses in and around the village appear on booking sites. A night there lets you see the temple during its long evening opening, which runs to about 21:30 according to the museum-reserve, and then reach Geghard at the start of the next day. Ask your host whether a lavash baking demonstration can be arranged, as some guesthouses offer one. Prices and availability change, so compare current listings on Booking.com .
Block 2: Hiking in Khosrov
The Khosrov Forest State Reserve is the main reason to stay more than a day. It covers 232 km2, ranks as IUCN Category Ia, and was set up in the 4th century by King Khosrov III before becoming a state reserve in 1958. Visitors follow set routes with rangers, and an operator can include the permit. Without an operator, register at the guardhouse, pay the reserve fee and go with a ranger or guide.
Persian leopard, bezoar goat and brown bear live here. Stay on registered routes. Plan hikes from September to May.
Havuts Tar, a half-day walk of 5 to 7 km each way, can fill the first morning, and a ranger-led route can fill the second day. Wear sturdy shoes and take a guide or a GPS track.
Block 3: Adding Other Places
Yerevan is the natural base for most visitors, with Garni as a return trip. Etchmiadzin adds a different kind of stop, since its treasury holds the Holy Lance in a case of 1687 in the museum there. Choose one area per day, as buses to Garni are infrequent and a taxi may be the practical connection.
What You Need to Carry
- Armenian dram (AMD) in cash for taxis, parking and village cafes.
- Temple entry is 1,500 AMD for adults and 750 AMD for reduced tickets.
- Sturdy shoes for the gorge and Havuts Tar.
