A Long Weekend for Two in Western Crete
Romance in Crete works best when you stay in one region and let the days be slow. This plan uses western Crete, with Chania as the base, because the old harbour, a famous lagoon and a palm beach all sit within reach of one another. Costs are in euros. Wildfires are a summer risk from April to October, so look up fire alerts and road closures for your area each morning. Inland temperatures can pass 35 degrees Celsius in July and August, so keep active plans for the morning.
Day one: Chania at dusk
Spend the afternoon in the old town, then walk to the end of the harbour breakwater, where the Egyptian lighthouse stands. The sun goes down behind the Rodopou peninsula, and the harbour lights come on. The Topanas quarter behind the waterfront has Venetian mansions with stone doorways, and several are now boutique guesthouses. If the weather turns, the Archaeological Museum of Chania costs EUR 15 and is shut on Tuesdays, according to Hellenic Heritage .
Day two: a boat to Balos
Day boats leave Kissamos port, around 40 km west of Chania, and cross to the Balos lagoon between May and October. Adult fares are from about EUR 25 to 45, depending on the operator, and Cretan Daily Cruises is one of them. The lagoon is shallow and protected, so you paddle and float instead of diving, and fires and camping are not allowed. Bring cash for the small municipal fee. A rough track from Kaliviani is the alternative, but it needs a high car and many rental agreements exclude damage on dirt roads.
Day three: Rethymno and Preveli
Drive east to Rethymno for a slow walk through the Venetian lanes. The Rimondi Fountain, the loggia and the Fortezza make a short, pretty loop. Entry to the fortress is about EUR 4 to 5, and the closing time varies by season.
Then continue about 35 km south to Preveli. A stairway of 300 to 450 steps leads down to a beach where a river reaches the sea beside a grove of native date palms. Allow 15 to 40 minutes going down and longer coming up. Between the steps and the heat, this is a morning or late-afternoon excursion. In season, boats from Plakias reach the beach for around EUR 12 to 18 return.
A winery evening
Back near Chania, Manousakis Winery at Vatolakkos offers tastings among orange trees on a garden terrace. Contact the winery to reserve a time. Because the roads are twisty and unlit, choose a taxi or a designated driver.
For a quieter option
Loutro, on the south coast, has no road. Ferries from Chora Sfakion take you there in season, and evenings are about the sound of the sea. Service is thin in winter, so confirm sailing times before committing to a night.
Safety for swimmers
Elafonisi and Falassarna face open water on the west coast, and strong winds can produce rip currents, so swim in sheltered coves. If you head to the south coast, the cave cliffs at Matala sit on an old Roman cemetery, so swim only from the beach, and never climb or jump from the rocks.
