Where to Walk Near Kazungula
Kazungula is not a walking town. It is a border and freight junction, and heavy trucks use the roads around the bridge. There is no town trail or heritage route here, so the sensible plan is to walk in the places nearby that are set up for it, and to keep to a guide whenever animals are around.
In Kasane, Botswana
A guided walking tour of about two hours is listed in Kasane under the name Kasane Cultural Village. It is described as including the Prison Baobab and a market. A traditional dance show is also listed in town. Ask the operator about days and prices before you go. Kasane is about 8 km west of the Kazungula Bridge.
Near Victoria Falls, Zambia
Two options sit close to the Falls. Mukuni Village is a working Leya village about 7 km from the Falls, with a curio market, and you walk through with a local guide. Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park has marked trails to the Falls, roughly 80 km from the bridge. Waterproofs are useful in the wet season because the spray is heavy.
Where not to walk
Elephants, hippos and crocodiles use the banks of the Chobe and Zambezi and the bush that edges them. A walk beside the water, or into the bush, without a licensed guide is unsafe. This applies at any hour. Never wade or swim.
If you meet an elephant on a road, stop moving, keep your distance and let it pass. If you are driving, do not pass between an elephant and a calf.
Choosing a safer way to see wildlife
For most visitors a boat cruise or an open vehicle is the better way to see animals. A Chobe cruise from Kasane takes about three hours, and afternoon drives in Chobe National Park commonly run from about 3:00 to 6:00 pm. People who want to be on foot among wildlife should look for walking safaris led by licensed guides.
Practical advice
- Wear closed shoes, a hat and sun protection, and carry water.
- Chobe District is a malaria area, with the highest risk from about November to April. Ask a doctor about antimalarials.
- Normal travel precautions apply.
- Check the latest entry rules before you travel, since health screening applies to some arrivals.
- Bring a passport valid for six months after arrival, with two free pages for Zambia and three for Botswana.
