Kingston for Couples: Mountain Views and Sunsets
Travel advice as of October 2026: Violent crime is high across Jamaica and is concentrated in inner-city areas. The UK FCDO and the US State Department each name places to avoid, parts of Kingston among them. Book licensed or hotel-arranged transport, stay off the streets after dark, and read gov.uk and travel.state.gov before departure.
Kingston is a capital city, so couples will not find a honeymoon resort or a stretch of hotel beach here. What it offers is a short list of atmospheric settings: a hillside inn above the city lights, a Georgian-era estate in the evening, a Sunday dub session on a ridge and a boat out to a coral cay. If beaches matter most, spend a few nights here and the rest on the coast. The advice for all four is the same: arrange a driver in advance, since the city is unsafe to walk at night.
Above the city: Strawberry Hill
Up in Irish Town, roughly 945 m above sea level, Strawberry Hill is a Blue Mountains hotel run by the Island Outpost group of Chris Blackwell. 12 colonial-style cottages have fretwork, shutters and private verandas, and an infinity pool seems to hang over Kingston and its harbour. A restaurant and spa are also listed. Because one report claims the property was offered for sale, ask who owns it and confirm it is open when you book. The drive from New Kingston takes about three quarters of an hour.
Sundown at Devon House
The Devon House estate on Hope Road stays open daily until 22:00, though its South Lawn closes at 18:00. Aim to arrive near the end of the afternoon, order a scoop at the I-Scream parlour and stroll the paths under mature trees. When the lawn closes, move on to a table at the Steak House on the Verandah, or to a cocktail at the Mahogany Tree Bar. Both are listed by the estate. Ask your hotel to send a car for the ride back.
A ridge, a sound system and a sunset
Every Sunday from 17:00 until midnight the Kingston Dub Club plays roots and dub from its terrace at 7b Skyline Drive, Jack’s Hill. Come about 17:30 to watch the sun go down over the harbour, then stay for the music as it builds toward its busiest stretch between 21:00 and 23:30. Vegetarian ital dishes, juices and herbal teas are sold, and entry is paid at the door. Hire a driver for both legs, as app taxis do not reliably come up the hill late at night.
Out to Lime Cay
A boat from Port Royal reaches this uninhabited cay in about a quarter of an hour. Reports of the return fare run to about J$1,500 for an adult, in cash. The water by the shore is shallow and clear, and suits swimming and snorkelling. The cay offers no toilets, fresh water or shops, so carry everything you need and take your rubbish home. Weekdays are the quietest, but the FCDO cautions against empty beaches even by day, so travel with others or choose a busier day and fix a collection time with the boatman.
