Kuusalu Stays of Two to Three Days
A stay of two or three nights lets you see the Kuusalu coast without rushing. The parish sits in Harju County, 40 to 55 km east of Tallinn, and its sights are spread across forest, bog and shoreline. Accommodation is limited and varied, so this page starts with where to sleep, then lays out a simple plan.
Choosing where to stay
Art hotel at Viinistu. Viinistu has an art hotel and a restaurant on the same harbour as the Viinistu Art Museum. Visit Estonia lists the hotel, and you should check rooms, meals and rates with the hotel itself. This is the comfortable choice for a base on the coast.
Glamping and camping at Hara. Hara has a glamping and campsite listing on Visit Estonia and Puhka Eestis. Campsite guests get free entry to the base area of the Hara submarine base. Seasons and rates are best confirmed with the operator.
Free RMK campsites. RMK’s official campsites in Lahemaa are normally free, and the westernmost one on Kolga Bay is at Tsitre. They suit hikers carrying a tent, water and food.
Tallinn. The capital is under an hour away by car and has far more rooms. Search the coast and the capital together on Booking.com .
A plan for two or three days
| Day | Morning | Afternoon |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Viru bog boardwalk, 3 km | Tsitre tree trail and Kolga Bay |
| 2 | Hara submarine base and Majakivi boulder | Viinistu Art Museum and harbour |
| 3 | Käsmu or Palmse in eastern Lahemaa | Sagadi or Altja, then return |
On day one, the bog trail runs 3.5 km one way, and the loop is about 5.5 km. Details are on the RMK trail page . On day two, Hara tickets are EUR 10 for adults, EUR 7 for students and seniors and EUR 22 for families. The base is seasonal and opens by reservation off-season, so write to info@harasadam.ee . The Viinistu museum asks EUR 6 for adults and EUR 3 for concessions, and its days vary by season.
Day three goes beyond the parish. Käsmu, Palmse, Sagadi and Altja belong to Vihula parish in Lääne-Viru County. Lahemaa has no park entry fee, but sights charge, with Palmse manor about EUR 5 and the Sagadi forest museum about EUR 3.
Moving around
A car makes this plan practical. The E20 buses stop at Loksa tee, about 1.3 km from the bog trailhead, and the rest of the parish is far easier by car. Timetables are on peatus.ee .
Reservations and timing
- Kolga manor and the Kiiu tower accept visitors by advance booking only.
- Winter days are short, so keep one main stop for each day.
- Keep a spare half day for rain or wind off the Gulf of Finland.
