Leipzig Walking Routes and Music Trail
Leipzig walking routes and the Music Trail
Four routes cover most of what walkers want in Leipzig. All of them start in or near the compact core inside the Promenadenring, and you can join or leave any of them at a tram stop.
Route 1: the Notenspur Music Trail
The Notenspur strings together the places tied to Leipzig’s composers. Expect the Thomaskirche, the Bach-Museum, the Mendelssohn and Schumann houses and the Gewandhaus along the way.
- Thomaskirche: Bach is buried in the chancel. The Thomanerchor sings motets on Fridays at 18:00 and Saturdays at 15:00 during the school term.
- Bach-Museum (Thomaskirchhof 15/16): open 10:00 to 18:00 Tuesday to Sunday and shut on Mondays. Adults pay EUR 14, reduced tickets are EUR 9 and under-18s are admitted free. The first Tuesday of each month is free for everyone. Source: leipzig.travel .
Route 2: the Peaceful Revolution of 1989
Walk this one slowly and quietly. It links the Nikolaikirche, the Museum in der Runden Ecke and Augustusplatz, all connected with the 1989 protests that helped end the GDR.
- Nikolaikirche: the Monday peace prayer at 17:00 is worship, so do not wander through during it.
- Runde Ecke (Dittrichring 24): the museum occupies a former Stasi district office and is a documentation centre and memorial. The walk “Auf den Spuren der Friedlichen Revolution” costs EUR 7.50, or EUR 6 reduced. The museum lists daily hours of 10:00 to 18:00 but has posted a temporary 11:00 to 16:00, so check runde-ecke-leipzig.de .
- Zeitgeschichtliches Forum (Grimmaische Straße 6): free, open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00, and a dry place to pause. See hdg.de .
Route 3: arcades and courtyards
Follow the trade-fair courtyards known as Messehöfe around the Markt. Highlights are the Mädlerpassage, home of Auerbachs Keller at Grimmaische Straße 2 to 4, and Specks Hof. The route works in any weather because much of it is under cover.

Route 4: Plagwitz and the Spinnerei
Head west along Karl-Heine-Straße to the Karl-Heine-Kanal and the former cotton mill at Spinnereistraße 7. Fourteen galleries are open Tuesday to Saturday, 11:00 to 18:00, and the grounds are free. A quicker option is the S1 to S-Bahnhof Plagwitz, then about 5 minutes on foot. Check spinnerei.de for events.
Walking logistics
- Day ticket: Zone 110 costs EUR 9.90 and is valid from 09:00 until 04:00 the next day.
- Ticket habit: paper tickets must be validated the moment you board.
- Underground: the City Tunnel serves the Markt and Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz if you want to skip a stretch.
- Mondays: the Bach-Museum and the Forum are shut, so shift those stops to another day.
