A Romantic Weekend in Leipzig
A romantic weekend in Leipzig
Leipzig gives couples a short list of unhurried things to do: a candlelit cellar dinner, a choir or an orchestra, and a view from above. Here is how to line them up across a weekend, Friday to Sunday.
Friday evening: a cellar dinner
Start at Auerbachs Keller, inside the Mädlerpassage at Grimmaische Straße 2 to 4. The cellar was founded in 1525, so 2026 is its 500th anniversary. Besides the restaurant there is the Mephisto Bar, and a bronze Faust group marks the passage entrance. Friday and Saturday hours run from 12:00 to 23:00 in the Großer Keller, Sunday and Monday and Thursday from 12:00 to 22:00, and Tuesday and Wednesday from 17:00 to 22:00. Closing days fall on 23 and 24 December 2026. Reserve ahead via auerbachs-keller-leipzig.de .
Saturday afternoon: choir music
The Thomanerchor sings in the Thomaskirche on Saturdays at 15:00 and on Fridays at 18:00, during term only. Because school holidays interrupt the schedule, look at the church calendar first. No tickets are sold and no seats can be reserved. Buy the EUR 3 programme at the door from 45 minutes before the start, and take any free seat. This is a working church, so keep conversation quiet. The church posts times at thomaskirche.org .
Saturday evening: an orchestra night
The Gewandhaus stands on Augustusplatz and is home to the Gewandhausorchester. It is a different building from the Oper Leipzig next to it. Look up the concerts on the dates you are in town, and book early for evenings that attract a crowd.
Sunday: views and water
- Panorama Tower: the City-Hochhaus at Augustusplatz 9 rises 142.5 m, with its viewing platform on floor 31. A ticket is EUR 5 per adult, and the platform is free for children up to 5. Confirm the platform hours before a sunset visit. Details: leipzig.travel .
- Canal boat: an evening boat trip along the Karl-Heine-Kanal passes the old factories of Plagwitz. Operators and prices vary, so ask when you reserve. Do not swim in the canal.
Easy extras
- Wander through the Mädlerpassage and the surrounding Messehöfe between courses.
- The old centre inside the Promenadenring is compact and best explored on foot.
Where to sleep
Stay inside the ring road if you want the sights on foot, or close to the Hauptbahnhof if you plan to take trains out. Search hotels in Leipzig on Booking.com and compare locations.
