Two to Three Days in Ghardaïa and the M'Zab
A short stay in Ghardaïa Province works well over 2 or 3 days. That is long enough to cover the five ksour, the market and the palm groves, and short enough to avoid wearing out on the stepped lanes. The plan below assumes a flight from Algiers and a base in Ghardaïa.
Arrival and paperwork
- Visa. Ghardaïa is not on the Great South visa-on-arrival list, so lodge a standard visa application at an Algerian consulate well before you travel. Do not count on an electronic visa.
- Flight. Air Algérie operates Algiers to Ghardaïa (GHA) in about 1 hour 20 minutes. Around 12 weekly services were listed in early 2026, which is fewer than daily, so book ahead and expect occasional delays.
- By road. The drive from Algiers is about 600 km, taking 8 to 10 hours by bus or 6 to 8 hours by car.
- Money. The dinar (DZD) is the currency. October 2026 official rates were near 150 to 152 DZD per euro. Carry cash, since cards are accepted in few places.
Day one: market and ridge
Spend the afternoon in the arcaded market square of Ghardaïa. Late in the day, go up to Melika, where a ridge overlooks a large cemetery of whitewashed graves. The light is lovely at dusk, but taxis are needed to get back after dark, so arrange your ride.
Day two: Beni Isguen and El Atteuf
Begin at the guides’ office near the East Gate in Beni Isguen. Only guided visits are allowed, and office hours vary, so aim for morning or afternoon. Remember the rules: nobody smokes inside, residents are not photographed, and clothing is modest. If your guide tells you the auction is on, watch it from the edge. Then move to El Atteuf, the oldest of the ksour at about 1012, and look at the Sidi Brahim mosque from outside.
Day three: oasis and an optional extra
Walk the palm groves with a guide in the morning. If you have the time, add Metlili, about 40 to 45 km south, or Zelfana, about 65 to 67 km east, where the thermal pools are. Fly home that evening or the next day.
Where to stay
Reports say that visitors who are not Muslim may not sleep inside the walls of Beni Isguen. Choose a hotel in Ghardaïa or a traditional palm-grove guesthouse, and confirm availability and conditions with the host first. Tassili n’Ajjer and the Hoggar are over 1,000 km away and do not belong on this itinerary.
Season and safety
October to April is the comfortable time to go. Alcohol is not available in the valley. Bring photo ID for checkpoints, and leave drones and binoculars at home unless you have approval. You can compare hotels in Ghardaïa and consult the FCDO warnings page for Algeria before you commit. The OPVM site is the valley’s heritage authority.
