The Garni Historical-Cultural Museum-Reserve advertises an official guided tour. The listed rates are 3,000 AMD for a tour in Armenian and 5,000 AMD for one in a foreign language. Entry is bought separately at 1,500 AMD per adult, 750 AMD for children, pensioners and students, and nothing for under-12s.

On a guided visit you hear how the 24-column basalt temple, dated traditionally to about 77 CE, fell in the earthquake of 4 June 1679 and was put back together between 1969 and 1975. Your guide can also explain the royal summer palace remains and the bathhouse, where a mosaic of natural stones in 15 colours is under conservation.

Day Tours From Yerevan

Operators in the capital sell half-day and full-day outings that join Garni to Geghard Monastery. Several add the Symphony of the Stones and a lavash stop. These are resale listings, so prices differ widely, and it pays to compare. Look for what is included: transport, museum tickets, a guide, and time at each stop.

Khosrov Reserve With a Ranger

The Khosrov Forest State Reserve, 232 km2 of strict protection, lies close to Garni. You walk set routes with trained eco-inspectors, and tour operators fold the permit into the price. Leopards, bezoar goats and brown bears have been recorded, so stay on the registered path. The reserve is at its best between September and May.
