Guided Tours and Visits Around Kuusalu
Questions about guided tours come up often for Kuusalu parish, so this page answers them one by one. The short version: organised tours here are few, small and mostly arranged by message, and the best ones begin in Tallinn or at the site itself.
What guided options exist inside the parish?
Three kinds. Bog-shoe hikes at Viru bog, discovery tours at the Hara submarine base, and visits by arrangement at Kolga manor and the Kiiu tower. The parish lies in Harju County, about 40 to 55 km east of Tallinn, and has no town tour desk and no fleet of sightseeing boats. Plan to write or call before you travel.
How do bog-shoe tours work?
Guided hikes depart from the northern Viru bog car park. Bog shoes spread your weight, so a guided group can walk on the bog away from the boardwalk. Visitors on their own must stay on the boardwalk. Listings put prices from about EUR 47 per person, and some operators offer a group rate for up to 15 people, which can work out cheaper per head for a full party. Ask about the length of the walk, the gear provided and the group minimum before you book. The RMK trail page covers the rules for the boardwalk.
Can the Hara base be toured with a guide?
Yes. The operator arranges discovery tours by email at info@harasadam.ee . Routes can cover the submarine base, a nearby military base, Hara island and the Juminda peninsula. The standard ticket is EUR 10 for adults, EUR 7 for students and seniors and EUR 22 for families. Preschool children enter free. Part of the exhibition on the pier is closed for now, and the off-season means reservations. The Hara site lists all rules, including no climbing and no swimming or jumping into the water.
What about the manor and the tower?
- Kolga manor. Privately owned and partly restored. The main house opens by appointment, at events and on guided tours. Phone +372 501 0966 or write to kolgamanor@gmail.com . A museum stands beside it.
- Kiiu tower. Four floors, walls 1.8 m thick, a cafe inside and free parking. Advance booking only, on +372 503 0487 or kiiutower@gmail.com . See Visit Harju .
Are there day tours from Tallinn?
Yes. Group and private Lahemaa tours leave the capital, with marketplace listings from roughly EUR 55 to EUR 85 per person. Look closely at the itinerary, since many go to Palmse, Sagadi and Altja in Vihula parish and may skip Viru bog, Hara and Viinistu. Browse options on GetYourGuide .
Tips
- Book guided activities a few days ahead, especially between October and April.
- Wear waterproof shoes for the bog and warm layers for the coast.
- Self-drive visitors can use the Loksa tee exit on the E20 for the Viru bog trailhead; buses stop there too, about 1.3 km from the bog. See peatus.ee .
