Walking the Kairouan Medina in One Morning
The old city is flat and compact, which suits walking. Set aside about 3 hours, begin early, and plan to end at the Great Mosque before the early afternoon closing time.
Stage by stage
Start at Bab ech-Chouhada. This is the Martyrs Gate in the city walls. The ramparts were restored by the end of 2025 after part of the wall collapsed in December 2023. Enjoy them from the ground, because a climb along the top is not part of the visit.
Cross the souks. The main lanes carry you past brass, leather and textile stalls. The first hour is also the coolest, which makes it the best time for browsing.
Pause at the Three Doors. Founded in 866 CE, the mosque of Jami Tleta Bibane is in use for worship. Its facade is among the earliest decorated mosque facades in Islamic architecture, and the street view is the main way to see it.
End at the Great Mosque. The courtyard is open, the prayer hall is closed to non-Muslims, and the doors are left open so you can look inside. Summer hours are 07:30 to 14:00. In winter and during Ramadan they are 08:00 to 14:00. Fridays finish at 12:00.
Add-ons that need a taxi
The Sidi Amor Abada museum, in the Abada suburb, is too far from the dense core to walk comfortably and is closed on Mondays. The Aghlabid Basins are being restored, so you can look from the surroundings and ask whether the gate is open.
Streets and manners
- Wear covered shoulders and knees, and bring a scarf if you are a woman.
- If someone offers a free view from a roof or says a festival is happening today, you are being steered to a carpet shop. A friendly no is enough.
- Should you choose to go in, the Governor’s House shop has free entry, weavers and a roof terrace. Name your price before tea is served.
- The Souks El Majel are shuttered and run down, so skip them.
- Keep small dinar notes for water, pastry and tips to helpers you hire.
Beating the heat
Temperatures above 40 C are normal in July and August, and white stone reflects the sun. Be on the street by 08:00, wear a hat and drink often. Winter mornings are mild, but the monuments still shut by mid afternoon.
Reaching the start
No railway reaches Kairouan. Louages and buses arrive from Tunis, which is about 126 km and 2 hours away, and from Sousse. Both stations sit at the edge of the medina, and your hotel can point you to Bab ech-Chouhada.
Fees and guides
Since 1 April 2026 a major monument has cost about 20 to 30 TND, with another rise due in January 2027. A licensed guide carries Ministry of Tourism credentials. Agree the price and route first. See Kairouan walking tours for options sold from nearby cities, or the official monument page for hours.
