El Jem and Sousse as Day Trips from Kairouan
Advice from the US and UK governments should be read before any trip beyond Kairouan. Parts of the Tunisian border and military zones are off limits to visitors, and insurance may not cover travel against UK Foreign Office advice.
Kairouan sits on an inland plain in central Tunisia. The coast with its beaches is about 60 km east, and several heavyweight monuments lie within a morning’s reach.
At a glance
- El Jem: about 70 km, Roman amphitheatre, UNESCO site.
- Sousse: about 60 km, medina and ribat, UNESCO site.
- Monastir: ribat from 796 CE and the Bourguiba mausoleum.
- Sbeitla: about 100 km, in an essential-travel-only governorate (see below).
El Jem
The amphitheatre at El Jem is one of the largest Roman amphitheatres in existence and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. No public service runs directly from Kairouan, and the usual alternative is to change at Sousse. A hired car with a driver is easier, and a coach tour from the coast is another route. Fees follow the April 2026 heritage tariff, so plan on about 20 to 30 TND and confirm on arrival. In summer the arena offers little shade, so arrive early.
Sousse and Monastir
Louages and buses link Kairouan with Sousse. The medina and its ribat make a full half day. Regional museums in Sousse and Monastir are reported at about 10 TND for foreign visitors. Monastir follows along the coast and pairs with Sousse for a long day. Beaches are found here, not in Kairouan.
Organised options
Tour operators from Sousse, Hammamet and Tunis combine El Jem and Kairouan in one day, and entry fees are normally extra. Compare itineraries through El Jem tour listings and check how long the stop in Kairouan lasts.
Sbeitla and the Kasserine area
Sbeitla, famed for Roman ruins, is about 100 km from Kairouan and falls inside Kasserine Governorate. The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel there, and against all travel to Chaambi Mountains National Park and nearby military zones. Read the UK advice page and check the live advice map before even considering it, and do not treat Sbeitla as a casual afternoon excursion.
Places that are too far
Tozeur, Douz and Matmata are long journeys to the south, and the Sahara dunes begin 300 km or more away. Dougga and the Bardo museum in Tunis are also separate outings. Wikivoyage describes the regional layout in more detail on its Kairouan page .
Returning to Kairouan
Kairouan has no railway. If you finish the day in Sousse, ask where the louage and bus stations are and when the last service to Kairouan leaves. Tunis is about 126 km away and 2 hours by louage or bus.
Tips
- Heat is the main risk in summer. Carry water and plan outdoor stops before noon.
- Money is in Tunisian dinars. Cash is the safe choice for louages and small shops.
- Great Mosque hours (07:30 or 08:00 to 14:00, Fridays to 12:00) shape what time you leave Kairouan if you see the city before heading out.
