Heraklion Walks: Ramparts, Breakwater, Old Town
Four self-guided walks cover most of central Heraklion, and none needs a booking. They are short, mostly level and can be combined in a day. Spring and autumn are comfortable for walking, while July and August bring heat and a strong north wind, so start early in summer.
Route 1: the 25th of August Street axis (about 1 hour)
Begin at the old harbour and climb along 25th of August Street. The street leads up to Lions Square, whose formal name is Eleftheriou Venizelou Square. Landmarks along the way are the Venetian Loggia (the town hall today) and the church of Agios Titos, which is a church and not the cathedral. The Morosini Fountain stands in the square itself, and the cathedral of Agios Minas is a short stroll away.
Route 2: the ramparts (2 to 3 hours)
The walls make a ring of about 3 km, and you can walk along the top for free at any hour. On the south side is the Martinengo Bastion, the burial place of the writer Nikos Kazantzakis. Keep your voice down there. Two gates are named in guidebooks: the Jesus Gate to the south and the New Gate, which are separate openings in the wall.
Route 3: the harbour breakwater (1 to 2 hours)
The mole stretches from the Koules end of the port and measures about 2.4 km. In calm weather it is a pleasant outing. When waves break over the stones it becomes unsafe, so stay off it in a rough sea. The fortress itself charges EUR 10 (EUR 5 reduced) and does not open on Tuesdays.
Route 4: the museum quarter (1 hour plus visits)
Eleftherias Square adjoins the Archaeological Museum at Xanthoudidou 2. Its ticket is EUR 20 between April and October and EUR 12 between November and March. Late-opening Wednesdays start at 13:00 in summer and 10:00 in winter. You can follow the waterfront avenue Sofokli Venizelou from there to the Historical Museum of Crete and the Natural History Museum of Crete.
Paid walks
Guided walking tours of the old town are on sale through booking sites. Before paying, ask how long the walk lasts, which languages are offered and whether museum entry is part of the price.
Walker’s checklist
- Shoes with grip for worn stone.
- Water and a hat from May to October.
- A few coins for kiosks and cafes.
In summer, wildfire danger is high from April to October, so on walks out of town, respect any closure signs.
