Family Days Out in Swakopmund
Families get a good mix here: a flat town where kids can walk, a small museum, a giant crystal, and wild animals that you watch from a safe distance. Coastal mornings are cool and often foggy, so dress children in layers and save the outdoor stops for later in the day. Prices are in N$.
Ideas by age
- Under 8: the museum, the crystal gallery and a short seafront walk.
- Primary school age: the Living Desert tour, the catamaran cruise and Cape Cross.
- Older children and teens: Dune 7 and sandboarding.
Living Desert morning
Children aged 12 and under pay the child price, about N$550 at the 2025/26 rate compared with about N$1,000 for adults, and park fees are included. The operator expects younger children to behave well and stay supervised, and the guides do all the animal handling. The tour leaves Swakopmund around 08:00 and finishes by 12:00 to 13:00. Read the rules on the operator site .
The museum and the crystal
Swakopmund Museum, founded in 1951 by Dr Alfons Weber, stands on the seafront close to the lighthouse and the Mole. Hours are about 10:00 to 17:00 and entry is about N$30, so confirm on the day. Kristall Galerie holds a quartz cluster some 3 m tall, around 14 tonnes, discovered in 1985 at the Otjua mine near Karibib, and charges an entry fee. See the museum entry on museums.com.na .
Seals and dolphins from a boat
Catamaran cruises depart from Walvis Bay, about 35 km away, usually in the morning and lasting around 3 to 3.5 hours. Dolphins and seals are the draw, and pelicans and seals sometimes come right alongside. Teach children to look and not to reach out, feed or touch.
Cape Cross
The seal colony about 120 km north is loud and smelly, which children tend to find either thrilling or overwhelming. Everyone must keep to the walkways and stay behind the low barrier. Park entry is nil for ages 8 and under, and ages 9 to 15 pay a reduced rate that depends on nationality.
Sand play
Dune 7, near Walvis Bay, is a steep climb of about 25 to 50 minutes. Lie-down sandboarding gives younger riders a taste of the dunes, but operator age limits differ, so ask first.
Water safety
The sea is cold and the shorebreak and rip currents are strong, so keep children out of the surf and within arm’s reach near the water, and use only lifeguarded areas between the flags.
Skip the aquarium
The National Marine Aquarium has been shut since November 2023 for structural repairs, so choose the museum or the cruise instead.
