Punta Gorda Itinerary for Two to Four Days
Packaged multi-day tours do not run out of Punta Gorda, so the practical approach is to stay put for two to four nights and fan out each day. Downtown is compact, and the islands, ranchland and parks nearby are all within about an hour’s drive. Plan for a rental car. If you come between 1 June and 30 November, which is hurricane season, read your airline and hotel storm policies first.
Choosing a base
The Wyvern Hotel at 101 E Retta Esplanade puts you downtown and has Perch 360, a rooftop restaurant and bar. Sunseeker Resort Florida Gulf Coast, which belongs to Hilton’s Curio Collection, is a resort option over the Peace River in Port Charlotte. Flights land at Punta Gorda Airport, about 3 miles east of downtown, or at Southwest Florida International, about 40 miles south, so check which airlines serve each.
Day 1: Downtown on foot
Spend the morning with the Otocast murals app, which covers more than 30 painted walls. Then walk the Harborwalk, roughly 2.4 flat miles. In the afternoon, tour the Military Heritage Museum at 900 W Marion Ave (open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 to 4). At dusk, board the King Fisher Fleet Sunset Cruise at Fishermen’s Village, from $42 for 1.5 hours.
Day 2: Out on the water
King Fisher Fleet’s Cabbage Key cruise starts at $62 and lasts 7.5 hours. From December to April you can choose the Boca Grande cruise at the same price and length. Pack sun cream and a layer for the breeze. Cayo Costa is off the table: its ferry and overnight stays are suspended, and the cruise there is not running.
Day 3: Ranch and gardens
Join the 90-minute swamp buggy at Babcock Ranch Eco Tours, 8502 FL-31, booked with FareHarbor or on 800-500-5583. After lunch, stroll the Peace River Botanical and Sculpture Gardens at 5827 Riverside Dr, where adults pay $21 and the October to May hours are 9 to 4 daily.
Day 4: A longer drive
If you have an extra day, drive about 30 to 45 minutes south to the Edison and Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers (about $25 for adults on recent listings, so check first). Alternatively, spend the day on the sand at Englewood Beach or Stump Pass, about 35 to 45 minutes away.
Camping
Overnight camping at Cayo Costa State Park cannot be arranged for now, since ferry and overnight service there are suspended. Sleep in Punta Gorda and treat the islands as day outings.
