Punta Gorda for Couples: Sunsets and Dinners
Couples come to Punta Gorda for slow evenings: golden light over Charlotte Harbor, shaded historic streets and dinners with a water view. The city was rebuilt after Hurricane Charley struck in 2004, and its Old Florida look suits a quiet break for two. It is a harbor town rather than a beach resort. Hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November, so look at hotel storm policies when you book.
Evenings on the water
The King Fisher Fleet Sunset Cruise leaves Fishermen’s Village (1200 W Retta Esplanade) and costs from $42 for 1.5 hours. Phone 941-639-0969 to learn the current departure schedule. Winter is the busiest season, so reserve early for weekends.
Where to eat
- Perch 360 is a rooftop restaurant and bar at the Wyvern Hotel, 101 E Retta Esplanade.
- Carmelo’s Italian Ristorante, 321 W Retta Esplanade, serves dinner only in a historic house with a courtyard.
- Fishermen’s Village has waterfront restaurants, among them Latitude 26 upstairs. Tenants rotate, so look up current listings before you set a reservation.
Where to stay
The Wyvern Hotel is downtown, a short walk from the harbor and the restaurants above. For a resort stay, Sunseeker Resort Florida Gulf Coast, part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, sits across the Peace River in Port Charlotte.
A free stroll
At dusk, walk along Retta Esplanade under the shade trees and out onto the Gilchrist Park pier. Admission is free. The paved Harborwalk is flat, so sandals and a slow pace are fine.
One day on Gasparilla Island
Boca Grande is the best change of scene. Between December and April the King Fisher Fleet Boca Grande cruise starts at $62 and takes 7.5 hours. Driving takes about 45 to 60 minutes, and Gasparilla Island State Park charges $3 per vehicle. The Port Boca Grande Lighthouse Museum keeps November to May hours of 11 to 4 Monday to Saturday and 12 to 4 on Sunday.
Keep the water romantic and safe
Do not wade or swim in the harbor or river. Alligators live here, oyster bars are sharp, and stingrays hide in shallows. Summer afternoons bring lightning, so move indoors when thunder rumbles.
