Punta Gorda Day Trips to Islands and Gulf Beaches
From Punta Gorda you can reach a barrier island, two Gulf beaches, a historic estate and a river park in about an hour or less. Driving is the simplest way to do it. Times below are rough estimates from downtown. The hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November, and storms have closed parks and ferries in recent years, so look up current status first.
Gasparilla Island and Boca Grande
Roughly 45 to 60 minutes by road. Gasparilla Island State Park costs $3 per vehicle. The Port Boca Grande Lighthouse Museum reopened on 5 May 2025 and is listed at 11 to 4 Monday to Saturday and 12 to 4 on Sunday, November to May. Expect a causeway toll of about $6. Anglers know Boca Grande Pass for tarpon in spring and early summer. Between December and April, the King Fisher Fleet Boca Grande cruise (from $62, 7.5 hours) replaces the drive.
Manasota Key
Englewood Beach and Stump Pass Beach State Park are about 35 to 45 minutes away and offer the nearest Gulf sand. Stump Pass reopened on 19 September 2025 following Hurricane Milton, and parking runs about $3 per vehicle. Shuffle your feet when wading, since stingrays rest in shallow water.
Cabbage Key
King Fisher Fleet sails to Cabbage Key from about $62 for a 7.5-hour outing. The Cabbage Key Inn reopened after Hurricane Ian and was reported serving daily, though its hours are worth checking.
Fort Myers
The Edison and Ford Winter Estates are roughly 30 to 45 minutes away. Listings give about $25 for adults, $20 for teens and $15 for ages 6 to 12, with children under 6 free. These figures may have changed, so check before you go.
Myakka River State Park
About 45 to 60 minutes away, near Sarasota. The canopy walkway tower and the bird walk were announced as closed beginning 5 May 2026, and no reopening date has been given. Look at the park page before you drive, and confirm the Myakka Princess airboat is operating if that is your reason for going.
Cayo Costa
Right now, Cayo Costa State Park cannot be visited as a day trip. Ferry and tram service and overnight stays were unavailable as of July 2025, and the King Fisher Fleet cruise there is suspended. Private boats are the only way in. Never paddle across open water to a barrier island, and stay out of Boca Grande Pass in a small craft.
