Almaty City Walks and Strolls
Almaty is a walker’s city in its central grid: boulevards are wide, trees give shade and narrow aryk channels carry water along the kerbs. When you lose your bearings, remember that the mountains lie to the south, so uphill is south. This page gives five walking stops and a few tips for each season. Money is in tenge (KZT), about 470 to 490 per US dollar in 2026.
Five walking stops
Arbat, the pedestrian Zhibek Zholy
Car-free and lined with cafes, the Arbat is where street musicians perform and portrait artists draw visitors. The nearest metro stop is Zhibek Zholy.
Viktor Tsoi statue
Find it on Tulebaev Street, at the corner of Kabanbay Batyr Street. The statue shows the singer as Moro, the character he played in the 1988 film “Igla” (The Needle), whose final scene was filmed along this pedestrian avenue. Matvey Makushkin made the sculpture and it went up in 2018.
Panfilov Park circuit
Walk the park as one loop that takes in:
- the 56 m Zenkov Cathedral, built in 1907 and still used for worship, with free entry (cover your shoulders and speak quietly);
- the Memorial of Glory and its eternal flame for the 28 Panfilov Guardsmen, a place for a quiet pause;
- the Ykylas Museum of Folk Musical Instruments at Zenkov Street 24a, on the eastern side, open Tuesday to Sunday for about 1,000 KZT per adult.
Green Bazaar
At Zhibek Zholy Avenue 53 on the corner with Makatayev Street, this is the natural lunch stop. Sample kazy horse-meat sausage, kurt cheese balls, morkovcha carrot salad, dried fruit and nuts. The main pavilions are listed as open Tuesday to Sunday, 08:00 to 19:00, and mostly shut on Monday. Wallet thieves work the aisles.
Republic Square
The Independence Monument stands here, topped by the Golden Man, a Saka warrior on a winged snow leopard. Entry is free and the square is open to the sky.
Season by season
- Hot months: begin early and walk in the shade of the boulevards.
- Winter: wear boots with grip, since pavements are icy and icicles drop from roofs. Smog is at its worst from November to February.
- Wet or snowy days: the metro runs 06:20 to midnight for 120 KZT, and buses cost the same but take no cash, only an Onay card, a QR code or an app.
Keep in mind
- Stay out of the mountains on a city walk: Medeu is about 15 km away in a gorge and needs its own day.
- After dark, avoid the bar and club areas favoured by expatriates, where violent theft has been reported, and use licensed taxis.
- Do not photograph military sites, border areas or airports, where cameras are restricted.
