Turkistan with Kids: Rides, Shows and Crafts
A Kid-Friendly Base
The Karavansaray complex is the easy choice for families. It is free to enter and has canals, shops, restaurants and a family hotel under the same name. Plan mornings for rides and evenings for the water show.
Top Picks
- Flying Theatre (Altyn Samruk). A 30-minute 8D motion film for up to 40 people. Children from 4 to 12 pay a lower fare, about 5,200 to 6,300 KZT, and adults about 6,500 to 7,800 KZT. Tuesday prices have been advertised at half off, so ask what applies on your day. Ask about age and height limits before buying.
- Parade of Boats. A nightly show on the canal, free from the banks, usually around 20:00 to 21:00. Children can watch the story of Tolegen and Kyz Zhibek unfold.
- Family entertainment centre. Pony rides, a rope course, trampolines, bumper cars, a tea-cup ride and soft play, plus the Drop’n Twist tower and a spinning coaster All are paid.
- Electric car. A tour of the complex for about 2,000 KZT, with space for up to ten.
- Ethno-aul. Yurts to peek into, craft workshops and an archery range, with altybakan swings on the grounds. Ask on arrival about hours and fees.
A Sample Family Day
Spend the morning at the flying theatre and the rides, when the heat is lower. Break for lunch at one of the restaurants by the canals and rest during the hottest hours. Come back in the late afternoon for the electric car and the ethno-aul, then claim a spot on the canal bank before the Parade of Boats starts at about 20:00.
Where to Stay
The Karavansaray Turkistan Family Hotel is the family-oriented option. A second Karavansaray hotel, the Harbour, has harbour-view suites.
Eating with Children
Plov and samsa are easy choices for shared plates. Sandyq and Kerege sit within the complex, while Edem, Al-Fatih and Bayterek are in town. Cards work in larger places, and cash tenge covers the bazaar and the electric car.
Heat, Water and Shade
- July afternoons run 35 to 40 C. Rides and walks belong in the morning.
- Bring water, hats and sunscreen.
- Sauran, the steppe fortress north-west of the city, has no shade, so it suits only older children.
- There is no zoo or water park in the city.
Getting Around
Taxis are booked through Yandex Go or inDrive. The airport, Hazrat Sultan International (HSA), is about 21 km from the centre.
