Activities in Astana for Every Season
Activities in Astana through the year
Kazakhstan’s capital has a split personality. Summers are sunny and hot, while winters are among the coldest of any capital city. That shapes what you can do, so this guide groups the options by season. Costs are quoted in tenge (KZT), with about 470 to 500 KZT to the US dollar in 2026. The city was named Nur-Sultan for a few years from 2019, but Astana is the name in use today.
Warm months, May to September
- Ishim river boats. Pleasure boats operate on the river in the warm season, usually from about May. Piers and prices are not fixed, so ask locally.
- Outdoor pool clubs. Orman Park, about half an hour from the centre, charged roughly 5,000 KZT on Monday to Thursday and 7,000 KZT on Friday to Sunday in June 2026. Oasis Beach Club, with outdoor pools, was listed at 12,000 to 14,000 KZT.
- Central Park and the embankment. Free, flat and good for evening strolls.
- Nature at Korgalzhyn. Late April to September brings flamingos at Lake Tengiz, but visits need reserve permission and a staff escort, so plan ahead with the reserve office.
Cold months, November to March
- Sky Beach Club at Khan Shatyr. The indoor beach reopened on 1 May 2026. It holds air at about +30C. Adults pay 20,000 KZT and children 12,000 KZT, with under-3s free. Towels and robes cost extra.
- BEIBARYS banya. On Kenes Street, a three-hour package with a heated pool, sauna and hammam was about 8,000 KZT per adult in June 2026.
- Astana Opera. About 1,250 seats, with opera and ballet. Seats can start from low thousands of tenge, but the theatre sets prices per show.
- Ice slides and skating. City areas appear every winter. Their locations and prices change, so ask your hotel.
- Museums. The National Museum, Palace of Peace and the Singularity Museum at the Nur Alem sphere give long indoor stretches.
Ailand
The aquapark at Ailand closed on 1 September 2025 and is being rebuilt as an indoor entertainment centre, so slides are not an option. The oceanarium on the Korgalzhyn Highway, with a 70 m tunnel, appeared to be running in summer 2026. Check its prices and hours on the official site first.
Staying safe in the cold
Between November and March, lows can reach -30C or colder, and the wind makes it harsher. Plan outdoor stops of about 20 minutes. Dress in thermal layers and cover all skin. Stay off the river ice except at official rinks.
Getting about
The Tarlan Astana light rail opened in May 2026, runs about 06:00 to 23:00 and charges a flat 200 KZT. Buses charge 110 KZT with a card or QR and 220 KZT in cash until 30 November 2026. Yandex Go taxis are widely used. For fare background see the Astana Times report on the LRT . For entry rules, check the official UK advice on Kazakhstan , as the QazETA authorisation may soon be required.
