On Foot in Almaty and Astana
Kazakhstan’s two cities each hold one strong walking route, and neither leans on a guide, since both stay on clearly marked streets and park paths.
Almaty: gardens and market, 4 to 5 kilometers
Start in Panfilov Park among pine and birch alleys at the 1907 wooden Zenkov Cathedral, then walk east to the bronze Memorial of Glory. The Museum of Folk Musical Instruments named after Ykylas, on Zenkov Street, holds over 1,000 traditional instruments in an 1908 wooden garrison building (1,000 KZT). Continue 500 meters north to the Green Bazaar for kazy, dried curd kurt, and Almaty’s own Aport apples, then finish along pedestrianized Zhibek Zholy Street. Astana: Nurzhol Boulevard, 3 kilometers
Start at the Khan Shatyr tent and walk the length of Nurzhol Boulevard, designed by Kisho Kurokawa and lined with government ministries and formal gardens. Baiterek Monument’s 86-meter observation sphere costs 2,500 KZT to ascend; continue past the “Northern Lights” residential towers and the emerald-domed Supreme Court to the Ak Orda Presidential Palace and the blue-tiled Kazakhstan Central Concert Hall. What each route leaves out
First President’s Park sits 11 kilometers from Panfilov Park on the opposite side of Almaty, too far to add to the same walk. Medeu, 15 kilometers out in its own mountain canyon, is a half-day trip in its own right rather than a stop on a city walking route.
Season and footwear
Spring and autumn bring the most comfortable walking weather in both cities; summer heat and winter cold both push toward a shorter, better-timed route. Sturdy shoes matter more in Almaty, where older streets have uneven paving in places.
The verdict
Walk Almaty in the morning, before the bazaar crowds build and the heat sets in; walk Astana’s boulevard in late afternoon, when the glass and tile facades catch the low sun.
