Panama City Walking Routes and Distances
Panama City rewards walking in a few clearly bounded corridors rather than everywhere at once. Knowing where the boundary sits matters: Casco Viejo is policed and walkable, but the adjacent El Chorrillo neighborhood is not part of any safe walking route.
Casco Antiguo heritage circuit, 2.5 km
Starting at Plaza de la Independencia and the Cathedral Basilica, the route runs east along Calle 3a past the National Theatre ($5 entry) and the Church of San Francisco de Asís, on to Plaza Bolívar, then along the sea-facing ramparts of Paseo de Las Bóvedas and Plaza de Francia. Guna vendors sell mola textiles along the wall on the way back through Calle 8a to Iglesia de San José, home to the baroque Golden Altar, ending at Plaza Herrera. Two to three hours covers it comfortably.
Panamá Viejo ruins trail, 2 km
A paved and grassy self-guided loop connects the stone convent ruins of San José, the Convent of La Concepción with its underground cistern, the King’s Bridge, and a climb up the cathedral tower. Foreign adult admission is $15.00, open Tuesday-Sunday 08:30-16:30, and two hours covers the full site. This is the original 1519 settlement, distinct from the later walled Casco Antiguo.
Pipeline Road, Soberanía National Park
45 minutes from the city past Gamboa, a flat 17-kilometer gravel road cut during WWII holds a world birding record, 357 species logged here in a single 24-hour count in 1985. Entry runs $5.00, set by MiAmbiente, Panama’s environment ministry . Choosing a route: pick Casco Antiguo and Panamá Viejo together for a single full day inside the city; treat Pipeline Road as its own half-day given the drive out.
What to bring: comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and water for all four routes; Pipeline Road and the Metropolitan Park both run largely uncovered.
