Romance in Almaty: Gondolas and Yurts
Kazakhstan’s romance runs through mountain light and quiet distance rather than beach resorts, and nearly all of it is within a short drive of Almaty.
A gondola timed to sunset
The Medeu-Shymbulak gondola climbs to 2,260 meters and continues on the Combi lifts to Talgar Pass at 3,200 meters. Ride it in late afternoon, when the snow on the Zailiyskiy Alatau range turns gold, and stay for dinner at Bar3200, said to be Central Asia’s highest bar, as Almaty’s lights come on in the valley below. A private banya
Arasan Wellness & Spa in central Almaty rents private VIP suites alongside its public Russian banya, with steam rooms, birch venik treatments, and cold plunge pools, finished off with herbal tea and local honey in the lounge. Felt yurts above the Kolsay lakes
Saty village, the gateway to the three turquoise Kolsay lakes, has heated felt yurt camps with private terraces, wood-fired saunas, and stargazing far from any city light. Viator lists overnight Kolsay and Saty packages . Carry your original passport; the checkpoint at the entrance to Saty does not take photocopies.
Kok Tobe at dusk
A short cable car ride from Dostyk Avenue reaches Kok Tobe’s landscaped terraces, where a restaurant table comes with the whole illuminated city spread out below. Round trip tickets run 10,000 KZT.
An evening at the opera
Almaty’s Abay Opera House, built in 1934 in a yellow Italianate style, stages classical opera and ballet for 1,500 to 8,000 KZT a ticket. Astana Opera, a 1,250-seat hall opened in 2013 with acoustics by Enrico Moretti, is the capital’s equivalent if your trip is centered there instead.
The verdict
One alpine evening and one slow indoor one make a full weekend without repeating scenery: pair the gondola or Kok Tobe with the banya or a night at the opera.

Book Bar3200 dinner tables ahead on weekends; the gondola’s last descent runs earlier than most restaurants’ dinner hours in the city below, so check the return schedule before ordering dessert.
