Where to Go for a Kazakhstan Day Trip
Kazakhstan’s vast landscapes reward a day trip planned around one of two hub cities, since the distance between Almaty and Astana rules out a route that touches both.
Tamgaly petroglyphs
170 kilometers northwest of Almaty, about 2.5 to 3 hours via Karabastau village, Tamgaly holds roughly 5,000 Bronze and Iron Age carvings on dark shale cliffs, inscribed by UNESCO in 2004. Entry runs 1,500 KZT. Keep this separate from Tamgaly-Tas, a different 17th-century Buddhist rock-carving site on the Ili River near Qonaev; drivers sometimes conflate the two.
Charyn Canyon
Hike the Valley of Castles through 150-meter red sandstone walls carved by the Charyn River, 220 kilometers and about 3.5 hours east of Almaty. The walk down runs 3 kilometers one way; park entry costs around 850 KZT, plus a 500 KZT eco-shuttle if you skip the uphill walk back. Lake Kaindy
A sunken spruce forest pierces the surface of this glacial lake near Saty village, formed by a 1911 earthquake landslide. Boating and swimming are both banned to protect the submerged trees and to prevent hypothermic accidents in 5°C water; this is a walking and photography stop, reached by 4WD from Saty. Big Almaty Lake
25 kilometers south of the city, this turquoise reservoir at 2,511 meters is Almaty’s drinking water supply and a patrolled border zone. Private cars stop at the eco-post; from there it’s a 6 to 8 kilometer hike, an e-bike rental, or a licensed tour up to the water. Your original passport is required at the checkpoint.
Burabay, from Astana
250 kilometers north of the capital, Burabay’s granite lake and pine forest are reached by the daily morning express train from Astana-1 to Borovoe Kurort station in 2.5 to 3 hours, roughly 2,500 to 3,500 KZT one way. Kazakhstan’s national rail operator lists current schedules . The granite formation Zhumbaktas rises straight out of Lake Borovoe.
Weather and timing
Summer temperatures in Charyn and Altyn-Emel regularly reach 40 to 45°C, with no shade on the canyon trail, so carry at least 3 liters of water per person and avoid the midday hours. The verdict
Almaty’s day trips deal in heat and altitude; Astana’s deal in distance and cold wind. Neither city’s day trips reach the Caspian coast or Mangystau, over 2,000 kilometers away, so leave that for a dedicated trip.
