Museums and Monasteries to See in Pokhara
Between the lake and the mountains, Pokhara holds a cluster of built attractions worth a full day on their own: a mountaineering museum, two living Tibetan settlements, and a modern gondola.
International Mountain Museum
At Rato Phero, this 12-acre complex covers the human and natural history of the Himalayas across several halls, including the Hall of the Great Himalayas (all 14 peaks over 8,000m), the Hall of Fame (expeditions by Hillary, Norgay, Herzog, and Messner), and a Hall of Mountain People with Gurung, Sherpa, Rai, and Thakali displays. Tashipalkhel and Tashi Ling
Pokhara’s two Tibetan refugee settlements date to the 1960s. Tashipalkhel, in Hyangja, is home to Jangchub Choeling Monastery, where more than 200 monks gather to chant and debate doctrine at 15:30 daily, plus a workshop weaving wool carpets on traditional looms. Tashi Ling sits in Chhorepatan, near Davis Falls, with its own smaller monastery, stupa, and carpet showroom. Guided visits through community organizers run NPR 2,500-3,500 per person with transfers; a taxi and a self-guided wander cost only the fare. The Annapurna Cable Car
A Doppelmayr gondola links Sedi Bagar, north Lakeside, to the Sarangkot ridge in nine minutes, gaining 500 vertical meters over terraced farmland. Round trip runs NPR 1,500 for foreign visitors (NPR 900 one-way), the fastest way up for anyone who would rather not hike or negotiate a taxi fare. Gurung Memorial Museum
A smaller stop, with branches in both Ghandruk and Pokhara, documenting traditional Gurung dress (kachhad, ghalek), Gurkha military history, and stone architecture.
Tal Barahi Temple
The island pagoda in Phewa Lake, dedicated to Goddess Durga as Varahi, sits a short paddleboat ride from shore, worth folding into the same day if you are already near the water.
Planning around the day
IMM works well as a morning stop, the cable car around midday, and the Tibetan settlements in the afternoon; a fixed-fare taxi for the day covers the distances better than walking between them.
