Multi-Day Routes Across Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan is the world’s ninth-largest country, and its best material sits far enough from Almaty or Astana that a single day never quite covers it. Three routes work well as standalone trips.
Zhetysu lakes, 3 days from Almaty
Day one drives to Charyn Canyon for the Valley of Castles hike, then continues roughly 100 kilometers to Saty village for a homestay dinner of beshbarmak. Day two takes a 4WD UAZ transfer to Lake Kaindy’s sunken spruce forest, where swimming and boating are both banned to protect the submerged trees, then an afternoon at Kolsay Lake 1 for a rowboat or a lakeside walk. Day three heads into Altyn-Emel National Park for the Singing Dune and the striped Aktau Mountains before the drive back. Southern Silk Road, 3 days by overnight train
The Talgo express runs Almaty-2 to Turkestan overnight, about 10 hours, departing near 23:00. Day one covers the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, commissioned by Tamerlane in 1389 under a massive turquoise dome, plus the underground Hilvet mosque. Day two reaches the ruined city of Otrar, sacked by Genghis Khan, and the 14th-century mudbrick walls of Sauran, both in Turkestan Region and roughly 100 kilometers apart, not the 1,500-kilometer-distant Mangystau region on the Caspian coast. Mangystau, 4 days from Aktau
This route starts with a flight to Aktau on the Caspian Sea, over 2,000 kilometers from Almaty. A self-sufficient 4WD expedition covers the chalk spires of Bozzhyra, an arid limestone desert with no water and no beach despite the local nickname, plus the rock formations of Torysh and the underground mosque at Beket-Ata. Camping under open desert sky is standard; carry your own water and fuel, since towns are sparse along the route. Viator lists multi-day Mangystau and Bozzhyra expeditions from Aktau .
Planning notes
Book Talgo tickets the moment the 45-day advance window opens; the route sells out fast in summer. Buses covering the 1,200 kilometers between Almaty and Astana take 20 to 24 hours across largely empty steppe, so the express train or a domestic flight is the better choice whenever a route touches both cities.
The verdict
Treat each of these three routes as its own trip rather than stacking two together; even Zhetysu into Turkestan alone adds a full travel day on top of the itinerary above.
