Escaping Pokhara for the Day
Sarangkot, Davis Falls, and the Tal Barahi temple all sit 10 to 25 minutes from Lakeside, well inside city limits, and belong on a sightseeing itinerary rather than a day-trip list. These four routes actually leave the valley.
Begnas Lake and Rupa Lake (about 1 hour)
Fifteen kilometers east, these twin lakes see almost none of Phewa’s boat traffic or motorized noise. A wooden rowboat rents for NPR 400-500 an hour, and lakeside eateries serve grilled mahseer or tilapia with spicy chutney. Reach it by local bus from Prithvi Chowk (NPR 50, about an hour) or by taxi (35 minutes, NPR 1,200-1,500 round trip).
Australian Camp and Dhampus (half to full day)
The standard Annapurna foothill hike. A taxi to Kande takes 45 minutes (around NPR 1,500), then a steep 1.5-2 hour climb through rhododendron forest reaches Australian Camp at 2,060m, with close views of Annapurna South and Machapuchare. A gentler ridge trail continues down to the stone village of Dhampus (1,700m) for a Thakali lunch, then stairways down to Phedi. This route runs through the Annapurna Conservation Area, so it needs an ACAP permit (NPR 3,000, issued via the Nepal Tourism Board ) and, past the checkpoints, a licensed guide. Day-hike options around Australian Camp are on GetYourGuide .
Kushma (about 1.5 hours west)
Along the Baglung Highway in Parbat District, The Cliff Nepal runs a 228-meter canyon bungy, the world’s second-highest, suspended from a 520-meter pedestrian bridge over the Kali Gandaki gorge, alongside a tandem canyon swing and a sky-cycle. Get there by day-tour bus or private taxi; details are on The Cliff Nepal’s own site .
Bandipur (about 2.5 hours east)
An 18th-century Newari trading town at 1,030m, with pedestrian-only stone streets, carved wooden townhouses, and views toward Manaslu and Ganesh Himal. It works as a long day trip, though an overnight stop between Kathmandu and Pokhara gives the stone lanes and silk-farm history room to breathe. Local silk weaving and traditional Newari architecture are the draw here rather than any single sight, so it rewards slow walking more than a checklist.
What stays in the city
Sarangkot’s sunrise ridge, Tal Barahi’s island shrine, and Davis Falls with Gupteshwor Cave are all short taxi rides from Lakeside rather than excursions, so pairing one of the routes above with an in-city stop the same week, instead of the same day, keeps each outing unrushed.
Timing it right
All four routes climb out of the flat lakeside geography, so add an hour of buffer beyond what a map suggests; mountain roads here move slowly. Compare Lakeside hotel rates on Agoda , and see the sightseeing guide for the in-city landmarks these routes leave out.
Before you go
Agree a taxi fare in NPR before the vehicle leaves; meters are not used on any of these routes, including Kande and Kushma.
