Day Trips From Las Vegas, Ranked by Distance
Distance from the Strip is the single best predictor of whether a Las Vegas day trip actually stays a day trip. Here’s the list in order, closest first.
17 miles: Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area
A 25 to 30 minute drive west to a 13-mile Scenic Drive, the Calico Tanks Trail, and Ice Box Canyon. Between October 1 and May 31, 8am to 5pm, the Scenic Drive needs a timed-entry reservation at recreation.gov ($2 fee, plus $15 per-vehicle entrance); it’s not required June through September. 30 miles: Hoover Dam and Lake Mead
About 45 minutes southeast. The Visitor Center is $15, the Powerplant Tour into the 650-foot turbine room is $30, and the Full Dam Tour is $40 (minimum age 8, on-site tickets only). A free pedestrian sidewalk on the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge gives a 900-foot view of the dam at no cost. A 7-day vehicle pass to Lake Mead National Recreation Area costs $25 and covers boating and paddling.
55 miles: Valley of Fire State Park
Roughly an hour northeast via I-15, home to the Fire Wave, White Domes Trail, Elephant Rock and Atlatl Rock’s petroglyphs. Entry is $15 per vehicle for non-residents. Nevada State Parks closes the Fire Wave and Pastel Canyon trails May through September once temperatures pass 105°F. Valley of Fire tours from Las Vegas are on Viator .
120 to 140 miles: Death Valley National Park
About 2 to 2.5 hours one-way, and the hottest place on Earth, regularly 120°F to 130°F in summer. The National Park Service warns against hiking after 10am from May through September. October through April is the safe window for a single-day visit; summer makes this a dangerous add-on rather than a casual stop.
125 miles: Grand Canyon West Rim
2 to 2.5 hours one-way and genuinely feasible as a 6 to 8 hour round-trip day. Hualapai tribal land, not part of Grand Canyon National Park, so NPS passes aren’t accepted. Admission from $68, or $93-plus with the glass-floored Skywalk.
280 miles: Grand Canyon South Rim, not a day trip
