Turkistan on Foot: Precinct and Canal Circuits
What to Expect
Walking in Turkistan means two compact circuits. One covers the shrine precinct by day and the other the canal complex by night. Between and beyond them there is not much else to see on foot, so this is a half-day activity, not a full-day tour. Walk independently, or ask the reserve ticket office about a guide.
Daytime: The Azret Sultan Circuit
Plan 2 to 3 hours including the queue. Here is a sensible order, with distances from the Yasawi Mausoleum.
| Stop | Distance and direction | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| Yasawi Mausoleum | start | UNESCO site, begun 1389 |
| Rabiga Sultan Begim | about 60 m south-east | reconstructed late 15th-century mausoleum |
| Eastern Bathhouse | about 80 m south-west | nine rooms, built c.1580 to 1590 |
| Hilvet | about 150 m | underground mosque |
| Friday Mosque | nearby | museum inside |
| Citadel wall | nearby | fragments and gates |
Kultobe, the earliest settlement mound, lies beside the mausoleum, and the ethno-aul next to the museum has yurts and crafts if you need a break.
At the start you will show a printed ticket and an ID document and pass through screening. Foreign visitors from outside the CIS pay 5,000 KZT. Restoration is in progress, so the dome is under a canopy and some halls may be closed.
Evening: The Karavansaray Walk
The complex is free and sits next to the old town. Follow the canals and cross the bridges, then pause at Traders’ and Craftsmen’s Street for shops. By around 20:00 to 21:00 the Parade of Boats begins on the water, telling the legend of Tolegen and Kyz Zhibek. Confirm the time locally, since it moves with the season.
Dress and Conduct
- Cover shoulders and knees. Women should bring a scarf for their hair.
- Speak quietly and do not film worshippers.
- Follow staff instructions about shoes.
Heat and Timing
The precinct opens about 09:00 and closes about 18:00. In July, highs of 35 to 40 C make the first hours the best. April to May and September to October are comfortable all day.
When Feet Are Not Enough
Gauhar Ana mausoleum, about 4 to 6 km out, needs a taxi from Yandex Go or inDrive. Sauran and Otrar need a car, and the Sauran site has no shade whatsoever.
