Reserve Guides
The Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi is a working place of pilgrimage with restoration work in progress, so a local guide helps with which halls are open and where to stand. Foreign visitors from outside the CIS pay 5,000 KZT for entry, which also covers the Yasawi museum and the Rare Exhibits Hall. Bring the original passport for the turnstile and screening check.
Day Tours
A typical day links the old-town monuments with Otrar, a medieval Silk Road city on the Arys and Syr Darya confluence, and with the Arystan Bab shrine beside it. A private tour from Advantour starts around US$110 per person for four travellers in 2026, covering fees, guide and transport. A group tour on Expedia is listed at EUR 238 per adult. Welcome.kz and Eurasia.travel offer comparable days. Compare what each price includes: monument fees are frequently extra.
Packages from Almaty
Two-day versions spend the first day at the reserve and Karavansaray and the second at Otrar, Arystan Bab, and Sauran or Ukasha Ata. Three-day versions through Turkistan, Otrar and Ukasha Ata have been priced from US$385 to US$1,050 per person depending on group size. Hotels in these packages are the Karavansaray Family and Harbour properties. Almaty is about 850 km by road, so you will fly or take an overnight train to reach Turkistan.
Going It Alone with a Driver
- Sauran: about 8,000 KZT return by taxi. Ask for “Krepost Sauran”.
- Otrar: about 15,000 KZT return when booked through a hotel. Ask for Talapty village, where the main ruins lie.
- Fix the fare and waiting time before departing.
Evening Entertainment
At the Karavansaray, the nightly Parade of Boats can be watched free from the canal banks. The Kerege restaurant stages the “Endless Love” dinner show, discounted 10% for visitors from outside and 15% for hotel guests.
