Turkistan Activities: Shrines, Shows and Food
What a Day Looks Like
Start early at the Azret Sultan reserve, the shrine district at the centre of Turkistan, while the heat is low. Move to the Karavansaray in the afternoon and stay for the evening show. Lunch fits between the two, and the bazaar is the place for snacks. If you have a second day, spend it outside the city at Otrar, Sauran or Arystan Bab.
At the Reserve
- Yasawi Mausoleum: UNESCO listed since 2003 (reference 1103). The ticket for non-CIS foreigners is 5,000 KZT, about US$10, and it includes the Yasawi museum and the Rare Exhibits Hall.
- Entry: turnstiles, a printed ticket, an ID document and a security scan. Bring the original passport.
- Hours: roughly 09:00 to 18:00; check at the ticket office, since winter and holiday hours can shift.
- Restoration: the dome is screened and some interior rooms may be closed.
- Eastern Bathhouse: a museum in a late 16th-century bathhouse, about 80 m south-west of the mausoleum.
- Ethno-aul: yurts, felt, carpet and pottery workshops and archery beside the museum. Hours and prices are set at the reserve.
At the Karavansaray
The complex is free to enter and runs along canals with shops and restaurants. Its Parade of Boats show plays on the water nightly, usually between 20:00 and 21:00, and tells the Tolegen and Kyz Zhibek love story. Other draws are the Altyn Samruk Flying Theatre (about 30 minutes, adults about 6,500 to 7,800 KZT) and a family fun centre with rides. A “Tomyris” water show and the “Kyz Kuu” equestrian show are also advertised, so ask on site for days and times.
Food Worth Trying
Kazakh and Uzbek dishes dominate: plov, samsa from a tandyr oven, beshbarmak, shubat (fermented camel milk) and kumys. Restaurants named in guides include Sandyq, Kerege, Edem, Al-Fatih and Bayterek. Taxis can be booked through Yandex Go or inDrive.
Know Before You Go
- Modest dress is expected at the shrine: covered shoulders and knees, and a scarf for women’s hair.
- Summer afternoons can reach 40 C or more; April, May, September and October are easier.
- There is no river rafting here. The Syr Darya is a flat irrigation river, so water activities mean the Karavansaray canals.
