1. Watch the sunset from Kok-Tobe

Ride the 1,620 m cableway up from Dostyk Avenue 104B or Omarova Street 41 (koktobe.com ). The adult return fare is about 10,000 KZT and the park gate is free. The pay-off is the city lights spreading out below the mountain wall. Dinner is available at restaurants on the hill. The cable car has been reported running until 23:00 on weekdays and midnight Friday to Sunday, so double-check on the day. Look for the Beatles statue, where John Lennon sits with a guitar and the other three stand around him.

2. Sleep high at Shymbulak

Options at the resort include Tenir Eco Hotel and the S.N.e.G mini-hotel with its restaurant, both at the Combi-1 station near 2,850 m, and the Shymbulak Mountain Hotel. For dinner, Rifugio del Monte is a restaurant at the resort. Expect cold nights and thin air, even in summer. Adult lift tickets are 12,000 KZT return. 3. Book a private bath suite

4. Stroll at dusk

Walk through Panfilov Park, then head for the Arbat, the pedestrian section of Zhibek Zholy, where musicians play and artists draw portraits. Cafes line the street.

Medeu and the ice rink

The high-altitude ice rink at Medeu closed in spring 2025 for reconstruction, with reopening planned no earlier than the 2027-28 winter, so a skating date is off the table for now. Medeu’s dam and viewpoint are still open, and bus 12 gets you there for 120 KZT, cashless.

Safety notes for couples

  • Take licensed taxis. Violent theft is reported at night near bars and clubs in expatriate areas.
  • Watch for pickpockets in crowds.
