Almaty City Sights and Museums
Almaty is Kazakhstan’s biggest city but not its capital, which is Astana, some 1,200 km away. The city’s main sights are spread over a handful of flat districts, with a museum or two in outlying neighbourhoods. Budget about two days for the core. Prices are in tenge (KZT), at about 470 to 490 per US dollar in 2026.
Ten sights, in rough order of priority
- Zenkov Cathedral (Ascension Cathedral). A single timber church, 56 m high, completed between 1904 and 1907 to Andrei Zenkov’s plans and restored in 2017 to 2020. It is a working Orthodox church with free entry, so dress modestly. It has a name as the tall wooden church that survived the 1911 Kebin earthquake, around magnitude 8, with minor damage.
- Memorial of Glory, Panfilov Park. An eternal flame commemorating the 28 Panfilov Guardsmen. Treat it as a place for quiet respect.
- Central State Museum. Samal-1 microdistrict, building 44. Open 09:00 to 18:00 (tills shut 17:30), closed Tuesday. Foreign visitors pay 5,000 KZT, or 10,000 KZT with an overview tour in English, Kazakh or Russian. The Gold Collection hall holds Saka gold and tells the Golden Man story. Current prices: csmrk.kz .
- Kasteyev State Museum of Arts. Koktem-3 microdistrict, 22/1. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00 and shut on Mondays and the last day of the month. Adults pay about 2,000 KZT and foreign adults about 5,000 KZT. It reopened after reconstruction, so check hours.
- Ykylas Museum of Folk Musical Instruments. Zenkov Street 24a, Tuesday to Sunday, around 1,000 KZT for adults. Hours vary from listing to listing.
- Republic Square and the Independence Monument. Free and in the open air. The monument’s Golden Man is a Saka warrior mounted on a winged snow leopard.
- The metro. One line, 11 stations and 13.4 km, running 06:20 to midnight. A trip costs 120 KZT and the line opened in 2011. The stations are ornate.
- Almaty Central Mosque. Built in 1999 where an older Tatar mosque once stood. Visitors are welcome outside prayer times if they dress modestly.
- Green Bazaar. Zhibek Zholy Avenue 53, with food stalls and dried fruit. Listings give Tuesday to Sunday, 08:00 to 19:00, so check before visiting on a Monday.
- Kok-Tobe. The cableway is 1,620 m and the hill has views and a Beatles statue. Adults pay about 10,000 KZT return. The TV tower is closed to visitors.
Combining sights
Panfilov Park holds the cathedral and memorial, and the Ykylas museum sits at its eastern edge on Zenkov Street, so those three fit one morning. Put the Central State Museum and Kasteyev on a separate day. Taxis come from Yandex Go and inDrive. Uber does not operate in Kazakhstan.
