Punta Gorda Sights, Murals and Parks
Most of what is worth seeing in Punta Gorda sits within a short walk or drive of the harbor. The downtown you see today is largely a product of the rebuilding after Hurricane Charley on 13 August 2004, which favored Old Florida and Mediterranean Revival styles. If you visit between 1 June and 30 November, which is hurricane season, check opening hours after any storm.
Murals
Over 30 historic murals brighten downtown walls. Download the free Otocast app for audio commentary at each one, available all year. A good starting area is around Marion Ave.
Military Heritage Museum
At 900 W Marion Ave, the museum opens Tuesday to Saturday from 10 to 4. Entry is $18 for adults 15 and over, $14 for veterans and $10 for ages 5 to 14. Under 5 and active-duty personnel are free. Displays fill 17,000 square feet and number more than 20,000 artifacts. The doors are shut on Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Peace River Botanical and Sculpture Gardens
Set along Riverside Dr at number 5827, the gardens cover roughly 30 acres. Entry is $21 for adults, $18 for seniors 65 and over, $10 for students 6 to 17, and free for ages 0 to 5. Between October and May the gardens open daily 9 to 4. Between June and September they open Tuesday to Sunday 9 to 2 and close Mondays and 4 July. Last admission is 45 minutes before closing.
History Park
Several historic buildings were moved here, among them the Trabue Land Sales Office, the Price House, the Quednau-Hindman House, a Cigar Workers Cottage and the Calaboose. Sunday Market takes place from 9 am to 1 pm.
Harborfront parks
Gilchrist Park lines the harbor along Retta Esplanade. Laishley Park, at Nesbit St, faces the river and has a marina, a fishing pier, a Veterans Memorial and a boat ramp. Parking is available at both.
Wildlife Center
Peace River Wildlife Center, 3400 Ponce de Leon Pkwy, shelters native animals that cannot be released. It is free, with donations welcome. The education center and gift shop run roughly 11 to 4, but hours can shift during construction of a new education center, so see prwildlife.org first.
Where the historic district is
Look for the historic district downtown on Retta Esplanade and Marion Ave. Punta Gorda Isles is a canal subdivision from the 1950s and 1960s, best seen from the water.
