Cancún Walking Tours and Self-Guided Walks
Why walking is limited
Cancún is a car and bus city. No continuous promenade joins Playa Delfines to Punta Nizuc, and Boulevard Kukulcán is a fast road with resort frontage. The walks that work are in El Centro, at two archaeological sites and on Isla Mujeres. Treat each route as self-guided.
El Centro, downtown
Start at Parque de las Palapas, the plaza, where evening food stalls sell marquesitas. Mercado 28 is the next stop, and Avenida Yaxchilán and Avenida Tulum cross the same district. Entry to the plaza and market costs nothing. Go by day or early evening, and ride a registered taxi back after dark. The R-1 bus serves Avenida Tulum and the R-2 serves Avenida Kabah and Mercado 28, at about 10 MXN within the centre.
San Miguelito jungle trail
Paths lead through the jungle around the San Miguelito ruins, behind the Museo Maya at Km 16.5. Your 210 MXN foreign adult ticket covers the museum and ruins together. Hours for the ruins are about 09:00 to 16:30, Tuesday to Sunday. The INAH page lists them.
El Meco site walk
El Meco is at Km 2+700 on the Puerto Juárez to Punta Sam road, open daily 08:00 to 16:30 with last entry at 16:00. Foreign visitors pay 145 MXN and Mexican visitors 80 MXN. The pyramid stands about 12 to 17 m high. A taxi from downtown is the simplest approach. Official details are on the INAH El Meco page .
Isla Mujeres on foot
Take the Ultramar ferry from Puerto Juárez (about 580 MXN return for foreign adults). Walk around the town, then follow the path south to Punta Sur and its sculpture park. A daytime golf cart is about 1,300 MXN if you prefer to ride.
Not walks
Tulum and Cobá are regional day trips. The shore of Nichupté Lagoon is crocodile habitat with warning signs posted, so do not walk the edge or step in.
Isla Mujeres ferry details
Ultramar asks passengers to arrive 30 minutes before departure, and tickets are non-refundable. The crossing takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Playa Norte, near the town, is usually among the cleanest beaches in the area, but sargassum can arrive in any month, so check the daily sargassum traffic light. See Ultramar for fares.
Practical notes
- Carry pesos for markets and ticket booths.
- Hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November.
- Check the flag colour before any beach stop.
