Towers, plazas and views
Torre Escénica. A rotating observation tower at Km 4.5 beside the Embarcadero pier. It was listed as open in late 2025, so confirm the hours and price.
Parque de las Palapas and Mercado 28. These are free downtown stops. Food stalls fill the plaza in the evening, and the marquesita is the snack to try. Be cautious after dark and use registered taxis.
The Delfines sign. Playa Delfines has a Cancún sign that draws photographers at sunrise and sunset. The beach faces open surf with rip currents and red flags are frequent, so keep your feet dry.
Getting around
The R-1 and R-2 buses cost about 12 MXN to the Hotel Zone and about 10 MXN within the city centre, cash only. R-1 serves Avenida Tulum and the ADO terminal, and R-2 serves Avenida Kabah and Mercado 28. Neither goes to the airport. The ADO airport bus to downtown is around 115 to 130 MXN and takes about 50 minutes.
Before you go
- Pay in pesos (about 18.5 to US$1). Dollars are taken in the Hotel Zone at a poor rate.
- Every foreign visitor to Quintana Roo pays Visitax, about 285 MXN (about US$15), at visitax.gob.mx .
- Hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November, so check the National Hurricane Center before booking.
- Taxis are the usual way to reach El Meco, and agreeing the fare first avoids disputes. Uber has been contested by taxi unions, with past blockades, so pre-book rides and confirm the price.
