Punta Gorda With Kids: Museums, Wildlife, Cruises
Kids in Punta Gorda get boats, animals and interactive exhibits rather than a beach. The harbor water is muddy, and oyster bars, stingrays and alligators make it a poor choice for children to play in. If they want sand, the closest Gulf beaches are Englewood Beach and Boca Grande. Summer brings heat and afternoon lightning, and hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November, so book outdoor stops for the morning and check closures after storms.
Flight simulators and a laser range
The Military Heritage Museum at 900 W Marion Ave opens Tuesday to Saturday from 10 to 4. Tickets are $18 for adults 15 and up, $14 for veterans and $10 for ages 5 to 14. Under 5 and active-duty personnel enter free. In May, June and July the simulators, virtual reality and smokeless laser range run from 10 to 2. Exhibits fill 17,000 square feet with more than 20,000 artifacts. The museum closes on Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
Meeting injured wildlife
Peace River Wildlife Center looks after native animals that cannot be released. Visit the education center and gift shop at 3400 Ponce de Leon Pkwy, which keep hours near 11 to 4. Admission is free, though donations are welcome. A new education center is under construction, so look at prwildlife.org for current hours.
A ride through swamp and ranchland
Babcock Ranch Eco Tours, at 8502 FL-31, runs a 90-minute swamp buggy trip. Adults pay about $27 on booking sites. Ask about children’s fares when you book through FareHarbor or on 800-500-5583. Bring water and sun cream.
Trails at Alligator Creek Preserve
Find about 4 miles of trails at 10941 Burnt Store Rd, open from dawn to dusk at no charge. The visitor center schedule varies, so phone 941-575-5435 before you set out. Keep children on the trail and away from the water’s edge, where alligators can rest.
Short cruises
For small children, the King Fisher Fleet Harbor Tour from $42 (1.5 hours) is easier than the Peace River Nature Cruise from $52 (3.5 hours). In December the Christmas Light Canal Cruise starts at $37 and lasts 1 or 2 hours.
Sculpture and gardens
Peace River Botanical and Sculpture Gardens, at 5827 Riverside Dr, spans about 30 acres. Kids aged 6 to 17 pay $10 and ages 0 to 5 enter free, while adults pay $21 and seniors 65 and up pay $18. The gardens are open daily 9 to 4 from October to May. From June to September, hours are Tuesday to Sunday 9 to 2, with closures on Mondays and 4 July. Last entry is 45 minutes before closing.
