Walking in Suva: Seawall, Park and Gardens
What Exists and What Does Not
There is no walking-tour company to recommend in Central Division, so the walks here are self-guided. That suits Suva, where the main sights sit within reach of each other. Allow a half day with stops. Prices are in Fijian dollars (FJ$).
A Self-Guided Loop
- Suva Municipal Market, Usher Street and Rodwell Road. Free, closed Sunday. Produce on the ground floor, kava upstairs.
- Victoria Parade. The colonial strip, with the Government Buildings clock tower, the Old Town Hall and the Carnegie Library.
- Albert Park and the Grand Pacific Hotel. The hotel opened in 1914 and reopened in 2014; the Southern Cross landed in the park in 1928.
- Thurston Gardens. Free, with a 1918 clock tower and bandstand.
- Fiji Museum. Inside the gardens, 09:00 to 16:30 daily, FJ$20 for an overseas adult and FJ$10 for a child.
Walk in daylight, keep valuables out of sight and carry water. Allow time at the market and the museum, since both reward a slow look, and plan the loop for the morning so the museum is still open when you reach it at the end. Carry cash for market stalls.
The Seawall
Queen Elizabeth Drive has a seafront promenade that people from Suva use. Treat it as a daytime walk.
Island Tour at Damodar Arts Village
The arts village in Pacific Harbour, on Hibiscus Drive, runs an Island Tour that is a heritage walk. It reopened in October 2025. Call +679 229 9049 for the schedule.
Colo-i-Suva Paths
The forest park, about 20 minutes from central Suva, has marked trails with arrows and markers, and rangers offer guided walks. Overseas adults pay about FJ$5 and children about FJ$1. Walk in daylight, not alone and not at dusk, stay on the main paths, carry little and do not resist a robbery. The park closed after heavy rain in May 2026, so check that it is open. The pools by the rope swings can be slippery, so wear proper footwear.
Weather
Suva sits on the wet windward side, so carry rain gear. Heavy rain can bring flooding and road closures. Cyclone season normally runs from 1 November to 30 April, though cyclones can occur at any time. Saturday is a good day for the market, because Sunday is closed and Thursday to Saturday brings more outdoor sellers.
