Sights of Suva: Gardens, Hotel and Museum
A Compact Capital
Suva’s sights cluster around Victoria Parade, Thurston Gardens and the harbour, so you can cover them in a day. Shops and offices mostly close on Sunday. Costs are in Fijian dollars (FJ$). Carry cash for market stalls.
The Fiji Museum
Cakobau Road, Thurston Gardens. Open 09:00 to 16:30 every day, including public holidays, but closed on Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday and Diwali.
- Entry: overseas adults FJ$20, overseas children aged 2 to 15 FJ$10. Guided entry is FJ$30 and FJ$15.
- Highlights: Ratu Finau, a 13-metre double-hulled drua built in the early 1900s; the rudder of HMS Bounty; objects linked to cannibalism, including forks; archaeology about 3,700 years old.
- Background: founded in 1904 and opened to the public in 1955. A gallery renovation was reported nearly complete in March 2026, so check opening before you go.
Thurston Gardens
Free to enter and kept up by the museum. The gardens date from the 1880s and were reorganised in 1913; the clock tower and bandstand were built in 1918. Look for royal palms and water lilies.
Grand Pacific Hotel and Albert Park
The hotel stands at 584 to 618 Victoria Parade. It opened on 23 May 1914, closed in 1992 and was restored and reopened in May 2014. Across the road, Albert Park is where Charles Kingsford Smith landed the Southern Cross in 1928. The Victoria Lounge serves high tea; check the hotel for the price. The Government Buildings clock tower, the Old Town Hall and the Carnegie Library line the same parade.
Suva Municipal Market
Usher Street and Rodwell Road. Ground-floor stalls sell produce, flowers and coconut products, and upstairs you find dry goods and kava. Thursday to Saturday brings more sellers outdoors. Go early, since it is closed Sunday. Entry is free.
Colo-i-Suva Forest Park
About 20 minutes from central Suva. Waisila Creek feeds the pools, with entry at about FJ$5 for overseas adults and FJ$1 for children. Visit in daylight with company, stay on the main paths, carry little and do not resist a robbery. The park closed after heavy rain in May 2026, so check that it is open before heading out.
Levuka, a Separate Trip
The old port town of Levuka, on Ovalau, is in the Eastern Division. It was inscribed as Fiji’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013. A bus and ferry trip takes about 4 to 4.5 hours each way, so plan it as a separate overnight trip.
