Punta Gorda Activities: Harbor, River and Ranch
Charlotte Harbor and the Peace River shape everything you can do in Punta Gorda, Florida. Expect boat trips, a ranch swamp ride, bike paths and waterfront meals. Do not expect surf, ocean sand or theme parks, because none of them exist here. The busy season is November to April, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, so check closures after storms. Prices are in US dollars.

The Cayo Costa cruise is suspended because of hurricane damage.
Fishermen’s Village
This is a shopping and dining complex with a marina, built on pilings over the harbor. It suits a stroll, a browse and a meal. Restaurants come and go, so check before you plan around one. Latitude 26 is one of the waterfront restaurants on the upper floor.
A ranch swamp ride
Babcock Ranch Eco Tours, at 8502 FL-31, pairs a 90-minute swamp buggy eco-tour with a walking tour. The Gator Shack restaurant is on site. Reserve through FareHarbor or on 800-500-5583. Adult fares show around $27 on booking sites, and the day’s hours run from about 9 am into the early afternoon. Animals are seen as luck allows.
On two wheels
Downtown is flat and the Harborwalk is paved, so cycling is easy. TEAM Punta Gorda loans yellow bikes at no charge, and you can ask about pickup on 941-637-8326.
A pint
Peace River Beer Company has a taproom at 1732 Steadley Ave. Look up its hours before you head over.
Staying safe near the water
- Alligators live in fresh and brackish water here, so keep well back from banks.
- Oyster bars cut skin, and warm-season wounds can become infected with Vibrio, so wear water shoes.
- Shuffle your feet in shallows to avoid stepping on stingrays.
- Leave the water at the first sign of summer lightning.
- The muddy harbor is not a swimming spot. Sandy Gulf beaches are at Englewood Beach and Boca Grande, about 30 to 45 miles away.
