A Romantic Weekend in Swakopmund
Think quiet seafront walks, a balloon over the dunes and dinner on a pier, in a small coastal town with German-style architecture. The weather is the main thing to plan around, because cold sea fog is common in the morning and clears by midday, so pack jackets for the early starts. This outline shows one way to spend a weekend for two.
Friday evening: the seafront
Walk the Mole, the old breakwater begun in 1899, and continue to the jetty. The wooden jetty of 1905 gave way to the iron and concrete one started in 1912, which runs about 260 m out to sea. It reopened to walkers in 2010, and the seafood restaurant at the far end makes a natural place for dinner as the light fades. The lighthouse near the Mole is for admiring from outside. The jetty history on the Gondwana blog adds some colour. Keep to the promenade rather than the water’s edge, as the cold Atlantic has rip currents.
Saturday: dunes and desert light
Start before sunrise with a hot-air balloon flight over the dune belt, run by Hot Air Ballooning Namibia CC. The whole outing takes around 4 hours with transfers, and about 45 minutes of that is in the air. If wind cancels it, you will have the rest of the morning free.
For a longer and more dramatic outing, a tour to Sandwich Harbour shows dunes falling straight into the lagoon and the sea. It lies about 55 km south of Walvis Bay. A concession has controlled the site since 1 April 2026, so book a registered operator from Walvis Bay, and expect the tide to set the timing. Details are in the Namibian Sun report .
Sunday: a slow morning
Swakopmund has German bakeries, so breakfast can be slow and unhurried. Several operators in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay sell coastal scenic flights of 15 to 30 minutes if you want one more view from above.
Choosing a place to stay
Small guesthouses in the old town keep the colonial character and put you within a short walk of the sea and the restaurants. Ask about sea views and breakfast when you enquire. Look at options on Booking.com .
Practical points
- Rand notes are accepted alongside Namibian dollars.
- Sunrise flights are cold, so bring gloves or a scarf.
