Swakopmund on a Longer Namibia Route
Swakopmund does not have a catalogue of its own multi-day tours. What it offers is a comfortable stop in the middle of Namibia’s classic loop, with enough to fill two to four nights and a few overnight options within reach. This page explains where it fits and what the journeys either side look like. Money is in N$.
The classic loop
Travellers usually link Windhoek, Sossusvlei and Sesriem, Swakopmund with Walvis Bay, Damaraland with Spitzkoppe, and Etosha. Sossusvlei and Etosha are covered as their own destinations, so here they are just the stretches before and after the coast.
| Leg | Distance and time |
|---|---|
| Windhoek to Swakopmund | 352 km on the B2, about 4 to 4.5 hours |
| Sesriem and Sossusvlei to Swakopmund | about 345 to 400 km, 5 to 5.5 hours, mostly gravel |
| Etosha to Swakopmund | well over 500 km, about 6 to 8 hours |
Dune 45 sits on the road to Sossusvlei, deep in the interior, and is not part of a Swakopmund stay.
Flights and arrival
Airlink serves Walvis Bay airport from Johannesburg, and the airport is about 45 to 50 km from Swakopmund. No scheduled flight links Windhoek and Walvis Bay, so the drive from the capital is the normal choice. Keep left on the road.
One night at Spitzkoppe
The granite peaks lie roughly 150 km from town, about 1.5 to 2.5 hours, and the final stretch is gravel. A community camp allows overnight stays. The entry and camping charges are set locally, so ask on arrival.
North along the coast
The C34 runs from Swakopmund past Cape Cross, about 120 km away, and on into the Skeleton Coast National Park. Park charges follow the ministry schedule, with adult tiers matching those for Cape Cross. Because rules and permits for the Skeleton Coast change, confirm them with Namibia Wildlife Resorts before you commit to an overnight.
Choosing your nights
- Two nights: a Living Desert tour and a Walvis Bay cruise.
- Three nights: add Cape Cross or a Sandwich Harbour tour with a registered operator from Walvis Bay.
- Four nights: add the Moon Landscape and Welwitschia Drive, for which the MEFT office in Swakopmund issues the permit.
Accommodation
Small guesthouses and hotels with a German flavour cluster around the old centre, and Walvis Bay offers more places to stay. Stays can fill up in school holidays. Find rooms on Booking.com , and see Wikipedia for the town’s background.
